You really learn so many interesting techniques and tips on the forum. I am typing this with difficulty, I burned my hand holding my pipe out the window .

Tip from an old Plant worker, if you can count to 5, you are below 150 degs on bowl, if you can't hold it while counting to 5 you're too damn hot. Zach is right load that sucker below the rim, wet rim with spit and Houston we've got ignition . Don't think about smoking it, read a book, watch TV do something that relaxes you and you will develop a slow cadence. Don't worry about re lights. The Lighter Police will not take your lighter away that's what it's for. Happy Puffing. One more thing when you are thru, check pipe cleaner if it's really wet, let it rest, if not, load that sucker up again and have at it.

Great advice Brad!

And ha ha okiescout, I forgot to mention the gloves. No, I do the same as everyone else. It's the rule. Ha ha!

Some say to fill it half full to build the cake at the bottom, which is definitely hard to do. But, I am in the "hate cake" camp. It will build up soon enough, and then you are fighting it back for the rest of the life of the pipe. I too was anxious about getting a good cake, even at the heel, in the beginning, but now it just reduces how much tobacco I can get in there and it will start to crawl out when you light the pipe. Enjoy it now, while it's new. This is the time when you are learning that pipe, the way she wants to be smoked, handled, the feel in the hand, the cadence to keep her lit. This is the honeymoon. So, enjoy the hell out of it. And savor every moment of it. Take care of her, and she'll take care of you for a long time.
Happy smokes :puffy:

I managed to not burn anything, and even thoroughly enjoyed myself :puffpipe:

I've found that I quite like the Dunhill blend I picked at random, but I can't help but look at my dwindling supply and wonder what to order next.
Any suggestions?
Zach

If you like the Dunhill Blends, try Nitecap & 965, smoke separately or a mix of 50/50 of Nitecap and 965 is a very good smoke. Some say Nitecap is Nic strong so eat a little before.

Awwww... the happy couple, so sweet! ha ha. Dunhills are some good tobaccos, good suggestions. I like to keep a jar of chocolate candies by my chair when I smoke the strong blends though. Keeps the spins at bay, and they're making me fat, ha ha. But, be forewarned, you are entering the obsession zone asking for recommendations. There's a whole world, universe even, of tobaccos to try. Have fun, and welcome to the smokey side of life. :puffy:

@brad - Have you ever tried Peterson's "Old Dublin" blend? I was watching a review of it and the reviewer had very good things to say, calling it something along the lines of "one of the most balanced smokes I've ever had."
@folklore - Happy couple indeed :) If "end-of-the-semester" rush didn't have me floundering so desperately, we'd be enjoying a pleasantly warm afternoon together right now!
