Thanks Chasing. Seems schoolyard play is universal, since we played the same games here in the Faroe Islands.

In addition to what has already been written, I think a lot of tobacco consumption a 100 years and more ago was chewing tobacco. At least where I live, and especially in the lower classes.

Those old American 'trade papers' are a hoot. Could you imagine the uproar from the anti-tobacco zealots today if your local news stand carried such a publication today. The attitudes today are very reminiscent of those people who endorsed prohibition prior to 1919!

In reading about 17th century Denmark, and some of the Germanic states of that era, there were instances of them adding lots of aromatic goops to tobaccos to make them more like pastries. This weighed down to tobacco to increase the profit on a product sold by weight, offset the taxes paid on the pre-aromatic tobaccos, and it made tobacco more popular with the communities that prided themselves on their pasties.

Not quite a century ago, but I offer my recollection to help fill in another piece of the timeline.
I began Army Basic Training in August of 1986. I was part of the first wave of recruits not allowed to use tobacco.
We could smoke when we got there, but on October 1, 1986, the beginning of Uncle Sam's fiscal year, the new regs kicked in and tobacco was suddenly contraband.
My group did lots of push-ups as tobacco in its various forms was discovered in various creative places.
