might sound weird but if you spit a lot when smoking that will kill the flavor too. When you have excessive saliva swallow it. Your stomach acid is more then enough to kill anything in there you think you don't want to swallow in tiny amounts. Ironically it's also easier on your stomach. It keeps you from salivating as excessively unlike spitting. Over salivation keeps those flavor particles from contacting the receptors in the tongue fully and completely. Also just smoking more your body will get more used to it and not salivate as excessively.

Thanks... excess saliva is not an issue for me. Maybe it’s because I always use a filter, but I have not had an issue with that. Thanks for the tip, though.

I have been smoking pipes for 10 years, no tobacco use prior. I've smoked low nic aros to really heavy hitting plugs. Never gained a dependence, I could put my pipe down for a week without a thought. But that could just be me of course. Welcome to the hobby and the forum!

Yeah... I do not have an addictive personality, so I am not worried about the nicotine. It is more that I don’t want to get sick from strong nicotine blends. And, there is no reason to tempt fate by smoking higher nic tobacco. I also smoke with a filter, usually charcoal, so that should help absorb nic before it gets to my mouth. Thanks for your comment

I find the first time I smoke a new blend its always a little disappointing. You go in expecting it to taste like it arrived on a cloud surrounded by unicorns and baby angels based on the reviews and the way it smells in the tin. But then you fire it up and its like meh.

However after the initial let down from the first bowl, by the second bowl you have a better idea what to expect and begin to appreciate the tobacco for what it is rather than what you thought it would be. Sometimes it even starts to grow on you the more you work thru the tin and subsequent tins thereafter.

BTW I have that exact vanilla custard blend and believe me if you start smoking a lot of full flavored va/per/burs or English blends and then smoke some of that vanilla custard it will definitely taste like dessert, at least comparatively ?

I feel ya there drew! Before I built a tolerance I unknowingly smoked a very strong plug while laying in my hammock. Stood up after 45 mins, keeled over and puked. Nic sick is not fun

well if you ask me filters will kill at least some of the flavor always.

thanks. I know there is a lot of debate/opinions about filters. Some say they steal flavor... others say they don’t. But I have a deal with myself and my wife that I will only smoke with filters to try to lower some of the inherent risks. So I will have to work with that constant one way or another.

I appreciate the comment. Cheers

Filters keep you from burning your tongue. I use them mainly when also drinking and hanging out with other people. But they effect flavors and certainly some more then others.... Honestly some blends it just makes a touch smoother and some it makes taste like soggy cardboard.

i need to get a sampler of various blends aside from aromatics to test the waters more. I also just think my palate has not become accustomed to the taste of tobacco.

My understanding is that pipe filters are intended to absorb water, and only incidentally do they happen to absorb much else. Of course, there's no data to show anything either way that I'm aware of, just that the design intent was a drier smoke... not harm reduction.

Yes, and completely unnecessary if the tobacco is dried down to the right level. I believe they also remove some of the smoke along with a bit of the moisture, but you can "make up" for that by smoking more by loading the pipe with more tobacco. Or have another bowl!

Filters do tone it down a bit...i have several pipes with 6 mm and 9 mm, and I rotate them with others...not a deal breaker for me one way or the other...

prep the tobacco like I described and it will keep the moisture to a minimum..
but, I get some gurgling with certain pipes and in certain weather situations (well engineered pipes ...which to me are combination of accurate drilling, bowl size and shape, couple with shank length and stem type), keep things to a minimum.....

simply insert a pipe cleaner through the bit and keep puffing, if you get a little gurgling....

The world of flavors from aromatics run from semi to very sweet....caramel, vanilla, sugar, molasses, chocolate, rum, maple, whiskey, fruits....these are common sprays or sauces, added to base tobaccos
get on any of the websites that sell in bulk....read the descriptions and buy 3 to 5 at a time...1 oz. samplers.

you will learn what appeals to your taste buds...everyone is different, so appreciate opinions, but settle on your own, based on your tastes.
have fun,

Terry

Hey if your looking for pronounced flavors and not much tobacco taste for bulk try Russ' blends from pipesandcigars.com. All his aros taste like how they smell but they are really wet so give them a good hour dry atleast. If you want to try english I'd recommend Peter Stokebeye proper english. It is my first 1 and I have no reason to switch at the moment, it's smooth, not smokey, and taste like caramel to me.

The room note is mostly appreciated by company, hardly by the smoker. Unless you leave the room, and then come back, you're unlikely to smell the glorious smell of an aromatic or the inglorious stench of a latakia bomb.

inglorious? inglorious stench of Latakia!?!?! Hang on...me and tribunal are getting together to discuss revoking your man card... What's next, are you going to tell us you don't like the smell of diesel exhaust?

You are killing me here pal. But we talked. We decided we like you. As penance for your slip of the tongue, go eat two pounds of bacon, listen to some old Tim Allen and hop up any gas engine device (car, lawn mower, weed wacker) by turbo charging it to 230% horsepower.
