I have a pipe that's very tight when putting the stem back in so once in a while I'll have a small gap like that.

If he was playing sharp then pulled out a bit, it would fix the problem. That's the way I saw the comment. I'm just a tuba player so we don't bother with pushing in or pulling out, we just use an alternate fingering or lip it. :)

Correct. I was suggesting the pull was the remedy for his having been sharp.
