Glad you asked this question. New myself and I have only one briar so far. I have only been smoking that pipe once a day- Usually for last smoke of the day because I read the same advice. I think the general consensus is what logic should suggest: If you smoke it often-clean it more often. That's what I'm taking from this. haha Also, I just noticed that this is a week old and the last guy to comment was the only recent thing about this thread... Anyway, I already typed my reply.

Remember that marketing has a lot to do with everything. Pipes can take a hell a lot of abuse as long as you are reasonable about it--use pipe cleaners and whatnot. I've been smoking this Peterson deluxe 4-5 bowls a day for about three weeks now, and it's starting to do great. The pipe will let you know when it's time to rest.

I think it's a good idea to have enough pipes so you can rest them. Wood and cob is a living product and need to dry. Only thing I don't rest is my clay pipe.

I am new (about 3 weeks into pipe smoking) and have only two pipes (Both meerschaum) a a third (Briar this time) in the mail. My observation is, that even after a 24 hour rest, sometimes the pipes still remain moist in places - The resting of pipes is to dry out the moisture.
And that is why I have started disliking heavily cased aromatics - they tend to produce a lot of moisture.

Resting your pipes is such a good excuse for having too many pipes. A month's vacation ought to make any pipe nearly perfect.

I generally smoke the same pipe twice per day for a week, cleaning after each smoke, then put it up and start on another. No issues here.

While I think it is probably a good idea to let a pipe rest for a day after smoking it, I don't always follow that. In 30 years I have burned out one pipe and I am going to blame that on the briar.
Cleaning after smoking keeps them from getting sour.
