Question about Perique

Is it normal to get a tingle on the tongue when smoking a VaPer? I rarely smoked Va blends because I almost always get bite, particularly from bright Va. I don't seem to have a problem with Carolina Red Flake as long as I sip, I can enjoy it. However I just opened a tin of Carolina Red w/Perique and I'm getting a tingle rather than bite. Maybe a spiciness? Not sure, but the Perique definitely seems very forward in this blend.

Yes and on your lips too in some cases. Not unpleasant like tongue bite, but I’ve noticed this phenomenon with some Perique heavy blends. It becomes something to look forward to once the initial WTH moment. At least for me. YMMV.

I often get an almost peppery tingle from Perique forward blends, though sometimes the Perique is more stewed fruit than pepper and I don't get that tingle at all. I'm not sure what determines which side of the Perique flavor I'll pick up but tingly pepper certainly isn't an uncommon sensation.

from my understanding it is percentage to total blend. Seriously that's what I have been told. And my little brief inconclusive experiments bear that out.

That would certainly make the most sense. I've seen reviews where people mention other tobacco varieties in a blend dampening the pepper quality of Perique but it's far beyond my pipe tobacco knowledge to speak to that.

The only blend that contains a significant dose of Perique that I managed to obtain is SG St.James Flake but I don't get the Pepper taste mentioned in the reviews ?

Even though the flavour profile is great and burns cool after every smoke I get a light acid reflux.

Curious if anyone else experienced the same thing with Perique forward blends ? Maybe this particular blend has to much of it.

Some people are allergic to perique - maybe due to the fermentation process involved? My best mate coughs like a school kid trying their first ciggie if there is even a whisp of perique in a blend. And this is despite enjoying the flavour of it

I just searched up acid reflux because I get a light case after smoking sometimes. Usually when I get through a full bowl, so I wondered if it had anything to do with lighting the ash too much. I’ll have to start knocking it out more than I do.

The vaper blends that I smoke carry no pepper in the smoke that I detect, plums, stewed fruits yes but no spice like taste or feel. I smoke St James, Telegraph Hill (this is my most smoked blend), DNR’s both Dunhill and Peterson iterations and Wessex Brigade Curly Cut. I’m like one of Pavlov’s dogs when I see Telegraph Hill it just does it for me and ages so well.

Virginias tend to bite me too. That's why I really prefer aged, dark or heavily stoved VAs. I have heard that it's mostly a body chemistry thing - where some love anything with a lot of VA leaf, I have to be very careful, especially, as you have experienced, with the brighter VAs.

Virginias can be "white peppery", find that often with FVF, red virginias "tangy" and make my mouth water, perique "tingly" in a hot spicy kind of way.

Put them all together, what have you got? Bacarududada*.... No, Cabbie's, where the sweet virginias play off the spicy perique in a beautiful way.

I have a love hate relationship with Perique. The blends that are spicy/tingly I don't care for.
I bought a pound of C&D Bayou Morning in 2016. I've been trying it every year, but it still gets in my nose like horseradish.
But other blends with Perique are fantastic, and some of my favorites.
I used to think it was the amount of Perique, but recently realized that's not the case. St James, Telegraph Hill, Windjammer, and most recently The Beast are all fantastic with great fermented tobacco flavor.
Others like OJK, Cajun Cake, Exclusive, and Bayou Morning have the peppery aspect of Perique that I don't like.
I'm not sure what makes it either peppery or fermented, but it's definitely not the amount of Perique added.

I used to get tongue bite but now I don't. I smoke the same tobacco; I smoke more often in fact but I started doing 2 things that made a huge difference: 1) I smoke more slowly. I am quick to smoke a bit stop, let it go out and pick it up later; usually about 10 minutes. A bowl lasts longer this way and makes for a good smoke. 2) I always have my mug of coffee and milk to consume between a few puffs. Zero tongue bite since I began doing these two things.
