Hello all,

I recently began purchasing some pipes as a hobby, and I stumbled upon this pipe for sale and bought it. I have no idea what it is or how to care for it, if you have any tips on how to keep it clean and well-maintained or just any general knowlege that would be great.

Thanks!

Cool old pipe! I’m sure you could clean off the remaining cork from the stem and reglue new cork rings on. I’ve made fishing rod handles in a similar fashion. Just drill the hole to fit the outer diameter of the stem, and glue them on, then sand down the outer diameter to a tight friction fit in the mortise.

Edit: There looks like some cork stuck in the mortise; that will probably need to get removed gently.

For the stem , Xrundog advice is ok. For the bowl , maybe clean it with running water. To fix , check Ben Rapaport book of antique pipes. There is a chapter with plenty of tips on how to fix it by yourself. If you are buying this type of pipes the book my be very usefull.

Thanks so much! I have a friend who makes pipes for a hobby, I'll post mine on a relevant sub. This is super helpful. those old antique pipes have so much charm, and I want to properly take care of them!
