The beauty of flake tobacco is that it can be prepared in several different ways. You can fold it a couple of times and stuff it in the pipe bowl whole, or if you're like me, I just kind of break it apart with my fingertips until it is a coarse cut/ribbon cut consistency, then fill the bowl as you normally would with any other tobacco. You can also rub it between your palms until it breaks apart, and I know a couple of guys that give it a quick zap in a coffee grinder to break it up.

I just take the flake and work it between my fingertips in a big pile until I get it to the consistency that I want it. Some guys also take a pair or scissors and cut the flake into small cubes with the scissors and load it that way. I think that's a little more work than Im willing to do, but if it works for you it might be worth it. Try all sorts of methods and see what works for you.

I tend to be fond of the "fold and stuff" method, but I am also apt to add a little crumbed up tobacco to the top for ease in lighting.

I use all the methods Pipe N. noted. I find that when I prep it different ways the flavor and experience itself is different. Pipe N. is shooting you right try them all and find out what works for you.

I have tried every method for smoking flakes and in my opinion the cube cut method is the best for me. I get a much more consistent burn and the flavors are fantastic. I smoke flakes exclusively and my enjoyment went up a noticeable amount since I began cube cutting. Before that I used to either fold and stuff or break it into chunks with my fingers. I would never uses a coffee grinder, that kinds of defeats the purpose of smoking a flake. Flakes are so great because they burn slowly, grinding them up will make it burn much too quickly.
