The main issue I see with a Bic is that it's pretty easy to damage the rim of the pipe using it.
My corn cob pipes are proof of this.
Now if you're smoking lower end pipes, or don't plan to ever resell your pipes, and the Bic gets the job done, then by all means continue on!

I have a nice collection of pipe lighters setting up on my displays. But, after getting all of my pipe gear out to enjoy a pipe at the cigar lounge, with cigar eyes all watching me and kind of chuckling at how much baggage a pipe smoker needs in comparison to a cigar guy, and then I find my lighter needs fluid or a flint, or is just misbehaving... I now just carry a Bic, tried true, and never lets me down. I can tell when it gets low, and I toss it for a new one that can be picked up anywhere for a dollar.
As far as hurting pipes, those lighters that bend to shoot the flame into the bowl are the real dangers. You'll cook the briar. Just hold a match or lighter about half an inch above the bowl and draw the flame down with your breath. Nothing more is needed, and your rims will love you for it.
Sure, buy a pipe lighter. But, in my experience the guys who smoke pipes regularly rarely ever keep one of those hundred dollar + lighters as their primary. They look great, but function and reliability are what we tend to reach for most often.

I have 5 nice pipe lighters. 2 IM Corona Old Boy's and 2 IM Coronoa Pipe Masters and 1 Davidoff Pipe Lighter. This does not take into account my nice Du Pont Cigar Lighters.
Yes most people think I am stupid for having that many nice lighters. I don't. I enjoy having the toys that go with smoking cigars and pipes. It is my money to do with as I wish. My kids don't suffer, they want for nothing. I have very few hobbies in this life. I don't collect classic cars or motorcycles, I don't collect Rolex watches, I don't collect gold or Diamonds( I used to). For my fun, it is pipes, tobacco and accouterments. All of my hobbies right now will bring a return on investment down the road and as long as I am not taking food off my kids plates, what does it matter.

I performed the marriage of two very close friends of mine and I received a very nice pipe lighter as a gift from the couple afterwards.
True, it does not burn tobacco any better or worse than a bic lighter or wooden match. But it is a keepsake I tend to have for the rest of my life, and I love using it on occasion to light my pipe.
And when I'm smoking with others, it's much nicer to pass them that lighter rather than a plastic bic or a flimsy pack of matches.
You only live once, so live well.
Cheers!

I do have a couple of "up scale" lighters. I purchased them because I could. Self-satisfaction was the motivator I guess.
:D Now, that was realistic.
I imagine my Zippo collection will be cherished by my son.
Greg, how many Zippos are there in your collection? Collectibles, new ones?

After wasting a small fortune on lighters I have come to the conclusion that a plain ol Bic is the best . The worst lighter for the money has to be the Old Boy a temperamental over priced sorry excuse for a good lighter such as a Zippo . So take the money and buy yourself a case of Bic's or seven new Zippos and get back to me .

I never let want be confused with need.. I like what I like. I have Calico lighters stashed everywhere.. both cars, tractor, patio, edc, etc.. for if I forget my Old Boy or Scribe lighters.

The real reason I collect nice lighters is that woman recognize them and then chase me down the street looking to hook up with me. I am a chick magnet with my nice lighters.
