I have a nice collection of pipe lighters setting up on my displays. But, after getting all of my pipe gear out to enjoy a pipe at the cigar lounge, with cigar eyes all watching me and kind of chuckling at how much baggage a pipe smoker needs in comparison to a cigar guy, and then I find my lighter needs fluid or a flint, or is just misbehaving... I now just carry a Bic, tried true, and never lets me down. I can tell when it gets low, and I toss it for a new one that can be picked up anywhere for a dollar.
As far as hurting pipes, those lighters that bend to shoot the flame into the bowl are the real dangers. You'll cook the briar. Just hold a match or lighter about half an inch above the bowl and draw the flame down with your breath. Nothing more is needed, and your rims will love you for it.
Sure, buy a pipe lighter. But, in my experience the guys who smoke pipes regularly rarely ever keep one of those hundred dollar + lighters as their primary. They look great, but function and reliability are what we tend to reach for most often.
