The Stanwell in my avatar is an estate pipe. Made in Denmark. It is more than a step or two above my two Doc Grabows. When it arrived, there was still dottle in the chamber and though the stem is acrylic, it had a nasty Latakia smell. I'm just thankful the original owner was a fan of Latakia and not aros.
Anyway, following the various Youtube videos on cleaning and sanitizing the pipe, it end up extremely clean. Appears the original owner smoked the pipe perhaps once or twice - absolutely no cake build-up, just dottle. The aroma was removed quickly and efficiently.
It smokes wonderfully now, and has taken on the aroma of my Virginia flake. If it has a flaw (and it's not really a flaw) - it's that the bowl is huge. It took approximately two and a half hours to smoke my way from top to bottom. For the rest of the day my brain was in a stupor. I'm taking a week off from smoking after that experience.

In my opinion no one beats Savinelli in the under 100 price range. They are the best smoking pipes in terms of bang for the buck. Most people do not understand the mechanics of a pipe and how important the shank dimensions are. When you get a pipe that has a shank dimension of 4.0-4.5mm you will get a dry smoking pipe. For beginners this is a huge deal as their technique is not the best and the pipe will compensate for poor technique.
My first pipe was a Sav which I still own and it is the reason I stuck with my pipes. If I had bought a Peterson or a Nording as my first, I doubt I would still be smoking. The Peterson I bought sucked, the Nording I bought sucked, you can buy a 70.00 Sav that will out smoke a Peterson or Nording hands down. Now of course this is just one guys opinion but after having owned 150-200 pipes over the years my first Sav still is a killer smoke.
For my money, no one touches the Italians for smoking quality in that price range.
