I couldn't figure out a better title, So don't hammer me too much for it ;)

Anyways. I still consider myself a newb and I wanted to ask a question related to purchasing tobacco/storing it in relation to smoking frequency. Obviously the more you smoke the more you need to buy and store. However Ive went from 3 a day to, 1 sometimes 2 bowls once or twice a week and sometimes not even touching a pipe for several weeks. I liquidated a bunch of stuff I don't smoke at all and doing a small reboot, and wanted to know how others with similar smoking habits do things. Do you buy a bunch or do you buy as needed kind of thing. Thank you for your replies in advanced

Seems like tins are for you. Most tins are 50g or 2 oz. If you really, really like something, keep maybe a half dozen tins. Put the date purchased on the bottom.

I wish I could buy as needed. That's how it used to be, and I'm someone who prefers tobacco without age. Buy a tin. Smoke the tin. Go buy another tin. But discounts, shipping, and availability prohibit that kind of process, at least for me. I'm not a regular smoker either. Two bowls in a day. One in a week. One every couple weeks. "220. 221. whatever it takes." I guess you have to decide by budget and preference. If money is no object, you're free to operate in all kinds of ways.

I buy mostly bulk with a tin here or there. I smoke about two to three bowls a day. The question is how much storage room do you have to dedicate to storing tobacco and the biggest danger of buying lbs and storing them is the old chestnut of changes in taste. And when you do buy in bulk you will find out that one lb isn't as much as it seems like at first.

As has been said probably hundreds of times on this forum, tobacco will never be as a cheap, easy to procure and plentiful as it is now.
Do you plan on being a pipe smoker for the rest of your life?
Do you have space to store tobacco?
Do you have the money to buy it?
If you said “yes” to these questions, buy as much as you can as soon as possible regardless of how much you consume.

I believe the future of pipe tobacco procurement looks real dark so I stocked up and probably have all I need.
I also LOVE buying and collecting pipe tobacco so simply doing that is part of the fun of the hobby for me.

If you have a blend that you really enjoy, do not hesitate to reasonably stock up on it. Why do I suggest this? I certainly agree with other members that pipe tobacco will never be less expensive. However, the current environment does not guarantee that a tobacco that you really enjoy will be available in a year or two down the road. This has to be really balanced against the very real possibility that your tastes will change over time. That is why hoarding is potentially inappropriate (among other concerns). For example, I used to smoke Dan Tobacco "Devil's Holiday" almost every day. I still enjoy it but, over time, my taste has expanded and now I only smoke it about once or twice a month. However, I have several pounds in my cellar. By contrast, I now smoke Virginias and Vapers every day. I, just today, opened a tin of of SPC Hogshead of which I have about 8 remaining tins. It has aged three plus years and is fantastic and also no longer available. So, this is, to some extent an personal, and even mathematical calculation: How old am I? how often do i smoke? How much do I love a particular blend? Am I presently confident that the blend will be readily available in the future? Only you can answer those questions.

I sampled a ton of baccy my first 2 years in the hobby to find out what I like. The past 3 years I have really been focused on building my cellar. I’m happy where I am and rarely make a purchase. It’s a good feeling to have and as others have said, prices will only rise. I feel like I have invested wisely and have years of enjoyment ahead.

As others mentioned, stocking up now on what you like can be a gamble. Just tonight I was smoking four year old Gawith Hoggarth Kendal Flake and realized by looking it up that it may not be available anymore. I bought 4 oz of it and was regretting not buying more. However, based on the kind of mixture (excellent aged Virginia leaf with a moderately heavy Lakeland scent) I’m not sure this is one I’d really want much more of, since I only smoke it once in a blue moon. So I guess I made the right choice?

On the other hand, I have a smattering of different tins and bulk that I’ve never tried. There might be something in there that would have been much cheaper 2 or more years ago, and still available widely (or at all). I try not to have buyer’s remorse in either direction, and just be happy with what I’ve got.

My current stash will last me 10 years (purchased over 7 years) which will be expanded much more slowly. So, while I may have tobaccos in there that I won’t love, at least I won’t have pounds of any particular blend that I just won’t smoke.

The other consideration is the option to sell off at a profit anything you realize isn’t really your jam.

Buy once, cry once (as long as you don’t go broke from the TAD bug). And enjoy every bowl as if it’s your last.

A good place to be, for sure!

I had this affliction and now am in the 'If I could get my hands on a tin of this or that I could complete my collection' mood. I enjoy the hunt of tobacco tin buying and trading(on this forum) as much as smoking but I don't do much in the way of buying anything in too much bulk, from a tin POV. I never buy bulk beyond a 250 gawith box or 8 oz tin and that has stopped. I am still in my trying infancy so there are lots of tins that I have bought and can't wait to try but have been in the cellar for 2, 3, 4, 5 years. gone are my days of buying that because I want to try it and it may be gone. There are a couple of Mac Baren HH blends I would love to have two tins each of, just to add to and complete my collection but won't buy vs trade.

It seems like just after covid there were some harder to get blend sourcing that has worked itself out.

In the US we are spoiled with Cornell and Diehl and G.L. Pease. Their blends fresh or aged are so varied and good I don't think I will ever worry to much about getting a good smoke. That being said, find what you like and buy that one or ask around here if it's OOP.

How much you smoke and how much you buy often has little correlation

I only smoke on the weekends, and on the odd occasion when I take a day off or when I’m on vacation.

When I first started smoking a pipe at university all those years ago, I had but one pipe.
And one pouch or tin of tobacco at a time.

I now have in excess of 200 pipes
Tobacco, not so much. But suffice to say, I have more than enough to last several years, if I do not buy another tin.

What we end up with is often way in excess of our needs.

PAD and TAD is not only real, but very contagious if you frequent this Forums 😏

When I get on a roll I’m good for one bowl a day. A bowl can last anywhere from 45min to 2 hours depending on pipe size, so even if I want to light a pipe, time must be permitted.
I started buying a lot of tobacco in early 2022 with the expectation that I would one day start cycling through and regularly have access to well aged tins.

At this rate I’ll never go through my stash. I’m never going to run out, unless my house is burned down god forbid. That said I still take advantage of sales and limited releases all the time. Always adding to the stash and always as much as it takes to get over $100 for free shipping.

Eventually my wife who’s 9 years my junior will have a boat load of well aged tobacco to get rid of. At some point someone is going to be really stoked.

It will never be cheaper! As others have said as well, we are kinda forced to buy when we don't "need" due to small batches selling out. Also it is just fun to buy a new tin.
