The square shank gives the bottom pipe a little more form and presence. The top pipe is already chubby-stout, so the round shank makes it look a little too cute. If someone gifted me with either pipe, I'd be pleased, just to balance my report. The top pipe does get bonus points for having an uncoated bowl.
