Here's two more photos from St. Louis that won't make the article, but are worthy of posting.

I don't know if I believe the first part of Notice #1 or any of it

for that matter.
"Pipe smokers who inhale live just as long as nonsmokers" ?

You never know. When they ask those ol' timers, "How did you live to 105" ?
A lot of times the answer is "I smoked and drank everyday".

Kevin,
Thanks for posting these because they add some back bone in regards to standing up to the tobacco = death advocates. However, to keep this in perspective, these quotes came from a 1964 report and these findings may not be supported or as valid today.

My Granny Thompson lived to be 103 hated English Peas, she smoked a pipe and picked up Dough-boys in London during WWI.

She was a hoot!

From the 2010 report:
http://www.surgeongeneral.gov/library/tobaccosmoke/report/full_report.pdf (Pg392)
Compared with persons who smoke cigarettes, smokers who exclusively smoke pipes or cigars have lower risk for many smoking-related diseases (NCI 1998). Smoke from pipes and cigars contains the same toxic substances as cigarette smoke, but those who use a pipe or cigar usually smoke at lower intensity; observation indicates that they tend not to inhale the smoke, thus reducing their exposure to its toxic substances (USDHEW 1979; NCI 1998; Shanks et al. 1998). Most current cigar users are young males who often smoke less than one cigar daily (NCI 1998); no data on risk for this population are available. For older adults who regularly use cigars, particularly those who smoke more than one cigar per day or inhale the smoke, risk of CHD is modestly higher than that for nonsmokers (NCI 1998; Iribarren et al. 1999; Jacobs et al. 1999b; Baker et al. 2000). Studies have reported similar increases in risks for CHD and cerebrovascular disease for persons who smoke a pipe exclusively (Henley et al. 2004).

Yeah but you put that one up and people can make whatever they want out of it, the old timers were MUCH more clear on their opinions, and their quotes therefore far more useful.

The point I get from the most recent report, is that they don't want to say anything that could cast a positive light on pipe or cigar smoking....after all, all tobaco use is evil, and just looking at it will harm you. The report findings in this area appear to be weak, and clearly lack supporting facts, or more likely, the facts don't support the anti agenda, so they are left out.

Shoot, guys, I remember a pipe-smoking surgeon general we had back in the 60's (or was it the 70's?) who scoffed at the whole brouhaha over smoking. Was on 60 Minutes, IIRC.
However, I must get these notices on some bumper stickers.

gecko13 -- yes, this is the sense I got also...Here is one of the beginning paragraphs in the 2004 study "Association Between Exclusive Pipe Smoking and Mortality From Cancer and Other Diseases":

Code:
However, the risks associated with the exclusive use of pipes have been difficult to study because pipes are the least commonly used tobacco product in the United States (2), and relatively few smokers use pipes exclusively. Traditionally, men in the United States have either switched from cigarettes to pipes or smoked pipes in combination with cigarettes or cigars (3).

So, there are LOTS of confounding issues that cloud any conclusions, particularly when the conclusions may be part of a federal or organizational agenda.
See study here.
