I was rummaging through the bins to pull some tobacco that I’m selling. There having been recent discussion that mentioned H&H Anniversary Cake, I decided to pull the 8 ounce tin from 2013. I immediately spotted rust on the bottom, the only tin with rust in that bin.
I opened the tin and found the contents still moist, so I transferred it to Mylar after smoking some to see if it had spoiled and finding it still good.
The bottom of the tin showed several small holes.

My 3 pounds of anniversary cake came in bags.
How long ago did it come in tins?
Was it just the tins or something in the tobacco that caused it, like a bad batch?

Tins can go bad. Sometimes, blends can cause tins to corrode from the inside out, as happened with some older tins of Haddo's Delight and other blends:

BTW, how long has your Anniversary Cake been in bags? Unless it's transferred to metallized Mylar bags or jars, it will dry out. Regular clear plastic bags are not for long term storage.

I just had that happen with 3 out of 10 of these newly acquired 2003/2004 GL Pease tins. Rust was on the inside of the can along the seam and the tobacco totally dried out and off-smelling. Luckily I got them for a steal and both cans of Bohemian Scandal were still in perfect condition.

I just put them into Mylar.
The cake came fairly dry as it is.
Left them wrapped in the ziplock they came in, and put them into Mylar while still in the ziplock. Figured it may work better that way to preserve it.

I have loads of stuff from the early to mid 200s. I just stuff them into free plastic bags that you get from the supermarket produce section and seal them with twist ties. If I'm out of twist ties, I use leftover bread bag plastic tags. Plastic bags never rust.

For the rarer stuff, I double bag.
