Like cigarmaster said, 85% tax tin FL means that 9$ tin of escudo I love to order costs 23$ at the local b&m. Thus I buy all my tobacco online. That being said I buy almost all my pipes local. Their price is usually about 10$ higher than online, which is worth being able to hold and inspect a potential purchase prior to whipping out the debit card. I feel a very strong responsibility to support local small business owners generally, but I am not willing to pay the ridiculous tobacco tax here. I never leave the b&m without buying something...it's just not gonna be baccy. I have had many conversations with the local owner and he understands my point of view completely.

I try and support the local B&M as much as possible. I, lije flyfishn, am from Buffalo NY. Taxes are outrageous here. It's hard enough running any small business here let alone a tobacco shop. I feel very luck to have a pipe shop 5 minutes away. They carve pipes in house and have about 30 bulk blends.
As for the original question, moisture levels very from blender to blender. It has nothing to do with where it is purchased.

Benefits of B&Ms are you can sometimes sample house blends and you get to handle the pipes. As far as online tobacco, haven't notice difference in moisture levels. Bulks are as tastey as tins. The pros are the personal experience and wisdom to be gained from veteran pipe smokers working at the B&Ms.

I purchase both online and local. I am fortunate to have a local shop near by. I try to buy local first, but sometimes there is a deal available that he can not provide. One advantage of the house blends is they are cheaper most times from what I have seen. If there is something you like you can stock up for cheaps.

My B&M is about a 40 minute drive. On the one hand, I like going there because it's a great atmosphere and the people there are extremely friendly and knowledgeable. On the other hand, their pipe tobacco selection is somewhat scarce, but they do offer just about every kind of Dunhill tobacco you can find, so I like stocking up on my EMP and Nightcap while I am there. He also gives me five free boxes of matches every time I make a purchase, which is nice. They also offer a very nice smoking lounge with big leather couches and a big screen TV, and it's nice to sit in there and have a smoke with the locals. I buy most of my tobacco online though, because as I said, local selection is scarce. The only issue I have ever had with tobacco buying online was a tin of MacBaren Black Ambrosia that I bought from smokingpipes.com once that wasn't sealed properly and was about a year and a half old. When I popped it open, the tobacco was way dry and tasted like ammonia smells. I emailed smokingpipes.com about it and they let me return the tin and credited my account since they had no more tins in stock and I didn't really want anything else. If you want atmosphere, hit up a B&M if you can. Online usually offers much better prices, greater selection than most local shops, and if you order from a site sponsor it is almost impossible to go wrong with anything you get.

We have a couple here in Knoxville TN but they are rather pricey. I tend to shop when I go out of town for tobacco. Pipes have all come from either antique stores and ebay. I want to order some tobacco pnline some time soon. It will probably be from P and C.

Real tobacconists are almost non existant in Australia. There are smoke shops, but only two or three pipe or cigar oriented stores across the whole country and the prices are sky high and choices very limited. So I buy everything online which suits me fine, its still expensive because shipping is $20 and can only order 3-4 tins at a time, but sure beats paying local prices and smoking Captain Black!

tobacco is not the only thing you buy i have never bought a pipe off lime because i always get iffy about how it will feel in my hand so i reserve my buying of pipes for in store.

In NYC everything costs twice as much as online because of taxes and high rents. Pipes as well as tobacco. I get everything online.

A b&m is about an hour drive minimum for me too, from home, the one the Texas guys meet at is only about 2 miles from work..there selection isn't massive but they have the essentials. Last time I was in there I picked up 50 gr of fmott, 4oz of PS twist and 2oz navy flake for about $25.

So I am coming to the conclusion here that. If prices arent bad at your B&M, buy a couple ounces every now and then, also buy your pipes and accessories in house because you can hold and see what your purchasing.
Bulk and Tins are generally cheaper and purchased online through on of our sponsors.

Not to whine but where I live it is either the drug store or the tobacco outlet. Not much available in either case and clerk on duty has zero knowledge of any of the products offered. Seldom even see the same person twice in a row. Thus I buy on online and greatly appreciate the tremendous variety available.
