Ive always had the feeling that the were not a gimick but more of a fad. It seemed like a great idea. If it was the best thing since sliced bread it would have stuck but it didnt. I dont seek or avoid them but I own none.

I also wonder if the idea didnt stick becuase people didnt know how to maintain them.

Nice ! A friend of mine had the Berretta made peacemaker ... he invariably put at least one round in the floor at the range every time he went ... it came with a 2.5lb trigger pull, Very accurate gun ,,, sub 1 inch groups at 50' (as long as you aim it at the target ! ;)).

As for meers and meer lined, I have one of each (Pete's) but I am in the tiny segment of people who always found them hotter to smoke than briar instead of cooler like most. C'est la vie !

Love it. A real beauty.
Nothing like shooting a Colt single action.

Here's a couple of my revolvers in this niche.
On the top is a Colt Single action Army made in 1907 and is still a great shooter. On the bottom is a Ruger Blackhawk (1968) 3 screw that is chambered in .357 mag.

Nice SAA!
Not to sidetrack the meer-lined topic more than needed, but my only Blackhawk is black powder (Old Army, the pinnacle of cap and ball revo’s😉).

Very nice. Looks like a reproduction of the old Remington Army in .44. I love shooting black powder.
Guess we should turn the thread back over to the OP......

Surprised at all the negative comments regarding meer lined pipes.
I have two Kaywoodie FlameGrain Meers (roughly WWII era). They are both light, smoke great, clean up easily, and all in are are really cool.
I have one it's a flacon. It's great. I don't have to be as careful with it as a meer. It certainly has it's place. Also they tend to be cheaper a lot of times then a meer. So they're great for what I used mine for, which is discovering if you really care to have a meer based on smoking qualities.
Clearly not for everyone but also clearly there is a reason they're commonly available too.

Wow normally not too excited to look at firearms. But love that. Love the history and the elegance too. That would be fun to shoot. (oh I like target shooting, just not into the firearms porn too often). That's a beaut though.

@Choatecav: Nice guns. For the complete 'I am a total arsehole' you need to own one of these. The ultimate hand cannon, endorsed by John Wayne in the movie True Grit and guaranteed to turn anything you hit with it into a pile of dead whatever. It can do things to Water Melons that R Lee Ermey could only dream about. I give you the Walker Colt .44. Not very practical in the conceal and carry department but the sort of gun Crocodile Dundee might pull out of his trousers whilst muttering 'Thats not a gun, this a gun mate!'. rotf

Re meer lined briar, I have a couple Kaywoodies from the 40’s that are good smokers, but not fantastic. Have 8 IMP block meer pipes, 3 of which outstanding Latakia blend pipes. Regarding briar, have some clunkers, a number of solid performers, and 12 that are outstanding. Of the outstanding briars, some really shine with straight VA blends, some with VAPER’s, and a pair superb with Meers. My observation, when that magical briar is revealed, it is an extraordinary & sublime experience. My $0.02

You've got that right. I have shot a few of them, but never owned one. Massive piece of metal and the precursor of the magnum weapons of today. They called them "horse pistols" because they were too heavy to carry on one's hip and were designed to be carried in pommel holsters on the pommel of a saddle.

@Choatecav : I had one that I shot at @woodsroad house and then left it with him since having one in NYC is an absolute no, no. It is a wonderful pistol, if you were in a gun fight you could tell your adversary to check his email and do some Face Book stuff whilst you loaded the damned thing and cover each cylinder breach with grease to prevent misfires. You have to wash it out in hot water after use and oil the hell out of it. Not a very practical weapon but great if you hit someone over the head with it!

I'm in good company with @Briar Lee, @sablebrush52, @Sobrbiker, and some others in being a fan of my meer-lined briars.

Without using a scoring sheet to evaluate the smoking qualities of his pipes, a fellow nevertheless over time finds himself reaching for some pipes more often than for others, when he's not trying to impress others at the pipe club with his best artisans. Without thinking about it, he just reaches for the ones that his brain has consistently registered as comfortable, trouble-free smokers.

By this standard, I must have a good opinion of meer-lined briars, because of the 25ish pipes that I keep in personal rotation, there are four that I reach for most commonly when I'm not thinking about it, and of those four, two are meer-lined briars.

One is a Chacom lovat, the other is a GBD billiard.

Cool, dry, open, easily lit.
Effortless and pleasant.

I'm not arguing for why that is, nor claiming that it's universal. I'm just saying that I've owned two meer-lined briars, and both of them wound up among my most go-to pipes.
