I love the idea of resting my pipe because I convince my wife that more pipes are needs not wants. But seriously, let's say you have your Monday pipe out. Throughout the day do you use that same pipe and rotate the next day or smoke a new pipe for every bowl you light up? Instance, I smoke a bowl at 4:30pm and then have my after dinner smoke at 6:00 and then my before bed bowl at 9:30. Same pipe? To thow another wrench in the mix, what if you have different toby for different times of the day?

I think everyone has their own method.

Here is mine.

I select about 4 or 5 that I will smoke through out the day.

I will smoke them for a week or so.

It will become apparent when a pipe needs to rest. If it needs rest before the others I will select a replacement.
But generally I will smoke one group of pipes for about a week, then swap them up for another group. (Group meaning those that I just feel like smoking, not a particular style or maker.)

So does the toby help you decide what to smoke in what pipe or is 'ghosting' a concern for you? Just trying to get everyones differing opinions.

Ghosting isn't a major concern for me...

With few exceptions; e.g. Stanwell's Melange... It ghosted one of my pipes badly after only one bowl. Needless to say I don't smoke it anymore.

As for intentional ghosting... I have to mention Uncle Arthur's Tapered Apple. It is perfectly suited to Va/Per's. So, I do have one dedicated pipe. Arthur did such a magnificent job on this wonderful pipe that it will never see any 1-Q or Balkan, Grousemoor, or any Vanilla or Maple blends... just Escudo Navy Deluxe, Peterson's Irish Oak with a pinch of Perique, or PS Luxury Bulls Eye Flake, etc.

If I have a desire to smoke a couple bowls of the same baccy, the pipe might be LUCKY if it gets an hr. rest. Is that 'proper', who knows? I do have certain pipes for certain tobacco. I have a HADDOS DELIGHT pipe, thats all that gets smoked in it.

Maybe a bit off topic.. But I have pipes reserved for english and this includes VaPers.. and those reserved for aros.... I don;t mix the two... but I do freely mix between the two groups... like I assume a good number of pipe men.. I have a lot of pipes... but I find myself really only smoking a small percentage... As I look at my regularly smoked rack I see.... 9 pipes for english-VaPers and 8 for aros.... there is quite another lot in the not smoked so regularly racks..... I like to smoke a pipe for a day mixed with others for that day.. and then give them a two day rest.... Just what I do... I really think you can do what yo want.. as long as you offer sufficient time to dry out....

To properly rest a pipe I recommend a comfy chair and a nice glass of adult beverage.

I think it was a rule of thumb offered by Russ Ouellette: rest your briar a full day for every bowl you smoked out of it.

So it's OK to smoke the same pipe all day long, but give it the necessary time off.
I smoke 7 or 8 bowls a day, choosing randomly from among 14-16 pipes. Some get at least 1 smoke a day, others not.

Most importantly, I think, is that I swab them out very well with pipe cleaners after each smoke.

Ok all, the reason I ask this is because I'm going on a week long trip and I only own 4 pipes (noob). My plan was smoke 4-6 bowls/day for each pipe. I would use 3 pipe rotation with my Churchwarden being reserved for one nightcap bowl/night. So...

Day 1

Pipe 1 4-6 bowls

Churchwarden 1 bowl

Day 2

Pipe 2 4-6 bowls

Churchwarden 1 bowl

Day 3

Pipe 3 4-6 bowls

churchwarden 1 bowl

Day 4

Same as day 1

etc....

Would this work and if not, how would you guys suggest it?

If your not sure I'd say go buy a cheap MM cob just for the trip. But I think it should work out fine for you as long as you run a cleaner or two through them after each bowl.

I concur with OldJazzLover.

You should be fine.

Just run a cleaner through them when you are done.

Maybe "screw" a paper-towel into the bowl to absorb any extra moisture and smooth the cake.

You might leave them out, rather than put them back into a case, which may aid in drying a bit faster.

I find that if I smoke the same pipe within a few hours time - its OK. However, lets say I smoke in the morning - go to work - come back for a smoke that same pipe will have a bite that taints the tobacco. So what I do is smoke a pipe in the morning - let it rest and smoke a different pipe at night - and - that pipe I can fill and light up to 3 times. I also rest the pipe the same number of days I smoke it. Smoke it 3 times = let it rest 3 days. I have over 100 pipe so letting my pipe rest is not an issue for me.

I have a 12 pipe round holder that sets on the end table . After a smoke I grab me a pipe cleaner and tidy things up .Then grab a paper towel and wipe the inside of bowl . Then I place the pipe in the holder stem side down bowl up top . The fresh pipes are are bowl side down in the holder . Every so often I change the pipes in the set useing the AOCSM method [ advanced old codger sniff the bowl method ]. :puffy:

I always have two pipes on deck and smoke three bowls alternating each before setting them in a rack to be cleaned. When I've smoked about eight pipes (three to four/sometimes five bowls a day, I do my cleaning chores. I have twenty pipes so rotation is not a problem for me. I'm a lat man so ghosting is no concern. All my pipes have a delicious latakia aroma about them. Also, being an English/Balkan smoker, my pipes never get wet dottle in them. I always smoke the tobacco right down to the bottom and shake the ash out when I'm done with a smoke. BTW I read the posts about cork knockers. My ashtrys have cork knockers in them but I find I'm getting lazy cleaning out ashtrays. When I'm home I tap my bowls with my open palm and then just dump into my fireplace. Ashes to ash and dust to dust....literally.

I will smoke one bowl in a pipe and then let it rest for at least one day usually more. I have my pipes dedicated to certain groups of tobacco i.e I have my VA flake pipes, Vaper flake pipes and 2 aromatic pipes that I will smoke Carter Hall in. If I am going to be out for the day I will smoke multiple bowls in that pipe but will let it rest for a number of days after that. I am of the belief that a pipe needs to rest and dry out properly for it to perform at it's best. I also have a few pipes that are dedicated to specific blends. For example I have a Lane Era Charatan Dublin that I only smoke SG FVF in and a Don Carlos Billiard that I only smoke SG Best Brown flake in. When I find a combo where the pipe and the blend just sing, I stick with it.

I agree with adding some cobs to fill out your rotation; they're a cheap way to keep smoking and they smoke a lot cooler than brylon. That being said you can get a brylon AKA bake-lite pipe for around fifteen bucks and smoke it continuously you entire trip with no effect whatsoever; just wear an oven mitt to hold it :nana:
