I only have had 1 bent pipe that was drilled properly.

Its a peterson system spigot. As much hate as peterson gets on some spots, they drilled it properly.

Now, every other bent pipe i have had has always been drilled off, the air way and the tenon hole. Always allowed moisture to pack up and make a mess.

Am wondering does any maker sell a pipe that is properly done?

Or does anyone have a diagram for each variant of bent Nording pipe that shows the exact line up on the internal drilling, to check what would be a good conversion to cavalier?

No, all these years and pipe makers still cant figure out the drilling. puffy

I had a Dr Grabow that was drilled so far off from center, that even back when I was a novice I noticed. But that was actually one of my best smokers back then.

Drilling far forward in a bent pipe mortise is normal. Sometimes theres a moisture well, sometimes not. Passing a pipe cleaner isn’t a consideration.

Bent pipes are tricky to drill. They should be drilled where the draft hole meets the bottom of the chamber, they should be drilled on center left to right but rarely will they be drilled on center top to bottom. On a straight pipe the draft hole is easily drilled on center with the mortise but with the angle of the bend rarely is that possible on a bent pipe. It's hard to explain but if you ever tried to drill a bent pipe you'd know what I mean. The more the pipe is bent the more challenging the drilling. The draft hole is not always drilled at the same angle of the mortise on a bent pipe. This is not because the pipe maker just decides to drill at a different angle, it is necessary because of the geometry of the bend and having the draft hole meet properly at the bottom of the chamber. This can be visualized if you take your bent pipe and take a pencil along side of the pipe. Line the pencil correctly at the same angle of the mortise/tennon and you can see where the draft hole would be if drilled at that same angle. I'm mainly referring here to 1/2 to 3/4 or full bents. Very slight bends can almost be drilled at the same angle as the mortise.

in the olden days I had a dr grabow bent, it smoked well but it was misdrilled to the point most people would look at it and assume it was a peterson system pipe.

the ropp J03 i just bought is a whistler now i got the pipe cleaners passing through the stem. But the miss drilling collects so much moisture it sounds like a coffee maker.

Good smoke though. But my peterson is the only perfectly drilled bent ive run across.

yet I always hear its meant to be drilled correctly and that is why "good" bents "need to cost 300$" each

I think the issue is why I had an interest in getting a cavalier pipe made back in the day. Until I saw the prices.

Have been looking at the nording lines, and a few others. Some SEEM as if they could be drilled out into a cavalier system. And get rid of gurgling.
