Some of you may remember the two estates i got on my birthday if not here is what they looked like and the things i first spotted that needed repair.
From these Pictures you can see that the stems cleary needed some cleaning also the Chacom had a very loose fitting stem.
This picture shows that the Chacom had a bit of the wood chipped probably from a previous reaming job but the previous owner.
The Amphora had a really dirty rim not badly burned but it needed a good clean.
The inside of the stems were jammed with black tar and need a heavy cleaning.
And here are some close ups
Step By Step
1) Cleaned the pipes with a shank brush and pipe cleaners using 99% Iso alcohol.
2) Went over the outside of the pipes wit a tooth brush using a bowl of warm water and a drop of dish soap. this helped to clear off any sticky tar or build up on the outside of the pipes.
3) Using a Castleford Reamer i ream the two pipes as best as i can. the Chacom was a little more difficult since the opening of the chamber was smaller then the bowl itself. so i still need to work at this one.
4) i did a Cotton ball/Alcohol treatment on both let it sit for 24hrs and added alcohol throughout the process.
5) Put both the pipe stems in oxyclean to soak for 3 hrs. This worked amazingly the water turned yellow instantly when i put in the stems and you could tell it was working at cleaning the entire time. Fantastic results.
6) went over the stems with a damp Magic eraser until all the yellowish spots were gone soaking the magic eraser and squeezing out access water as needed.
7) went over stems again with micro mesh pads, 1500, 3200, 6000, 12000 that was good enough i think.
8) clean out the stems with alcohol + shank brush and pipe cleaners. repeat until pipe cleaner comes out well clean.
9) Removed Cotton balls from bowls (cotton worked really well) and rubbed inside chamber with alcohol and set it aflame for a seconds to remove any burrs from the cotton.
10) Went at the crowns with cotton and saliva the chacom cleaned up well but the Amphora wasn't getting to the point i wanted so i switched to 12000 micro mesh on it to remover the black crud and it worked really well.
11) Cleaned the Shanks (step 8).
12) Fitting the stems. The Amphora Stem fit snug but the chacom was fairly loose, not fall off easily loose but moves around alot loose. So i looked online and found a method that i was willing to try.
Put a pipe cleaner into the stem so that the end of the cleaner lines up with the end of the tenon(side you insert into the pipe). using a flame, heat gun or boiling water, i use a bic lol heat each side of the tenon only for five to six seconds and then lightly and carefully press the tenon on to a flat surface for a second or two. Concentrate on keeping the stem evening if this is difficult to do then you are pushing down too hard. Caution: lot can go wrong with this method. I just feel like i should add this disclaimer just in case one of you come back to me and freak out lol. all in all though it was fairly simple, once you push it down DO NOT insert it into the pipe right away. Instead put it down go grab a drink of water or take a bathroom break the idea is to give it 3-5 mins to cool off with the pipe cleaner still in there. Once that is done then test fit. mine fit perfect but if yours is still loose then repeat the process if its too tight sand the tenon bit by bit until it goes in.
Here is some pictures of the outcome of the process listed above they still are not complete however i would like to ream the chacom better and i am waiting in the mail for my polish so i can shine these up. Comments, questions and concerns are all accepted here and appreciated i am by no means a professional this is just something i enjoy to do.
Cheers,
Smokey
