She's got imagination alright. I've seen her photos. A "break" is a great way of dispelling tension between folks, I used the technique often, as a copper, when handling domestic disputes. Such allows a "cool down" period. What works for one family may not work for another, depends entirely on the people/personalities involved. Gotta decide on the "fly" what works with each personality.

My "version" would depend entirely on the "kid" involved. Different personalities require different actions. I tend to mediate where possibly. I never yell as I learned the softer you speak the more attention you get. But, I write only based on my experiences.

The very night before my mother died, she was confessing her few and petty sins to me in hopes of making it past the bar to heaven.

She began to apologize to me for the tongue lashings and severe discipline (never, ever, physical) she carried out from my cradle to that day.

I assured her that all I was and ever would be I owned to her. That she taught me right from wrong, and refused to even let me take even a step down the wrong path of life. That I deserved every tounge lashing I ever got and needed more.

But, there were some few times when I’d defy her and like all Campbellite mothers I’d ever seen she’d pick up a steel stove poker and give me the choice between doing right or doing wrong.

So as she lay dying, I asked,

Mama, would you really have hit me with that stove poker?

Her dull eyes brightened and she smiled and said

I did get that down perfectly!

You, will never know.

Then she went on to warn me not to become a drunk, as older men sometimes do pick up the bottle, in their later years.

Mama did not believe, in time outs or taking a break.

Discipline is something I learned hard way. Physical punishment was the hallmark of S. Korean education system. Getting punched, kicked, hitted with broomsticks until they break.. That's just from the teachers. Then there were upper class men. Back then, I thought I deserved it. And try to do the right thing. Oh well, they didn't succeed.

My parents didn't believe in hitting my sister and I. Occasionally harsh words were there. Compared most other parents, they were very gentle.

I on the other hand resulted to lecturing. Boy scout was big in how my boys were brought up. Explaining what's good and what's bad. Choosing hard way over easy way out. Face the consequence. All I can say is, at least, my older boy still go camping on occasions. Younger boy didn't care for it, but he takes care to work out everyday.

Blimey, school sounds like it was where you get "eeeeeemotional damage".

I'd say she's a brilliant parent!

I don't remember ever yelling or getting "mad" (in a demonstrative way) at our kids - quiet "discipline", maybe a little "timeout" (one daughter hated sitting alone for a bit, the other would stare at me like she could care less at the age of 3, haha). More what you do and how, and as they age sometimes reason, lol, and tone of voice told the story.

Like with dogs, yes comparing them to puppies, less is always more, IMO.

So glad to see Kate feels like she can be out and about more and with her the best of luck with her health!

Unsaid and behind any story about the current Princess of Wales is if the finest doctors in the United Kingdom can save her, she’ll live to see her eldest son wear the crown.

And if not her husband will become the most eligible widower in the world.

A few nights before my mother died, I couldn’t help myself and began to cry.

She said that it was no tragedy that an 84 year old woman died, and that she’d seen me grow up and she’d had a long and full life. That it was good she would go, to see my father, and to not weep long for her passing.

Then she said, had she died of the uterine cancer she had in 1963 when she was 37 and I was 5 years old, that truly would have been a tragedy.

She said I’d have been raised by a step mother, and I’d have been lucky if she’d graduated high school first.

It's "Let's take a break". Is it lack of imagination? Is it her gentle nature? ( I saw plenty of hell fire on magazine cover of her face) Or is it the new method of disciplining?

Let's hear your version. Here's mine.

"Shut it! Royal pain!"
Princess of Whales has a literal staff of nannies at her disposal. She is hardly a reference for real-world, reality-based parenting.

All I ever needed for my one 8 year old child is boundaries. Physical boundaries, emotional boundaries, and behavioral boundaries. Once those are instilled, discipline is seldom required.
When I need to remind my child of the boundaries she’s well aware of, it’s by threatening the removal of privileges like screen time or treats. That has always been enough to deter poor behavior.
I suspect I’ll need to find new techniques as she gets older but this works for us for now.
