In 1939 R J Reynolds offered a free trial of the 1 3/4 ounce pocket tin of Prince Albert. Smoke 20 pipes or roll 30 cigarettes and if you weren’t happy mail the rest of unused tin back for a refund, if within a month of purchase. No doubt a few people took them up on it, but not many.
The same gimmick sells candy bars today, if you read the labels.
