I haven't tried it, but wouldn't those thin PA tins be harder to get the tobacco out? With the new tins there is plenty of room to get your thumb and fore finger in.
It's packed quite firmly. You loosen it with a finger or tool before dumping it into your pipe. Actually I'm more familiar with the Half & Half tins, if one can call memories from when I was six "familiar." My uncles smoked it, and the tins were always lying about. I used them as toys. As I remember, the lids on the ones similar to below were a bit sharp. Not enough to cut, but they felt uncomfortable as you pushed the tin open with your thumbs. I can't say I would prefer them to what we have now, but they do look cool.
