A few days ago I bought an Il Duca squat Acorn. I knew I had some extra money to spend on pipes or whatever. I had my eye on it for 5-6 months. I imagined a world where it was no longer on the site for me to look at it. An empty, sad feeling came over me... so I had to buy it... for my mental health of course.
I can empathize.. and I'd also love to see the pipe..

My gal doesn't want to know. Something tobacco-related comes to the house, she gets upset no matter what. She's not exactly a fan!

I don't find the need to lie / hide the true cost of my pipes from the wife. That being said, when she asked how much my Michael Parks commission cost, my answer was "less than an iPhone".

I don't buy many things for myself, rarely pipes, since I have fun in manufacturing pipes by myself. Anyway, I try and conceal my purchases cause sometimes when my wife sees something new (above all pipes) she asks me the price, not so that to control my expenses, but because she immediately takes advantage of the moment and wants some present for her that usually is two or three times mor expensive than my purchase! That's why when I tell her the price I lower it of 20 or 30 per cent at least!

My wife doesn't ask about my pipes and I don't ask about her shoes, clothes, make-up, hair product, and/or bags, etc... We respect each other's right to spend money without fear of judgement. We both work so rightfully so. It would be different if the bills weren't getting paid and/or if we had kids. She knows what my pipes cost and it's no big deal; she's cool with it and I'm cool with the decisions she makes with her money.

this reminds me of an old joke...

I had a nightmare last night.

I dreamed that I died and my wife sold my guns for what I told her I paid for them.

My wife generally has no idea how much I spend on pipes and tobacco. I think it has something to do with the fact that a lot of the time I buy her expensive cigarettes, or rolling tobacco for her. There's things she buys that I don't question as well. I kind of figured she wouldn't know the difference if a new pipe showed up. But one night in the hero I pulled out my MM legend that I smoke daily, and she asked me when I got the new (acrylic) stem for it! Kind of shocked me. She then asked me How much i spent on that, sarcastically, and I told her it wad only 8 dollars. She didn't ask me how many I bought though!

I'm surprisingly tight when it comes to spending money on myself and my wife of 41 years is the same way. When I see a new pipe I want, I usually just tell her to take the money that she would spend on my birthday, Father's Day, Anniversary, etc., and save it until there is enough to buy the pipe I want or one like it. Mostly I keep my PAD under control by searching the local antique shops and collectible stores for estate pipes.
I do have to hide new tobacco purchases from her occasionally because I have a terrible time with TAD - Oh! Look dear!, The Country Squire just sent me a couple of samples of some of their blends!

My situation is similar kind of don't ask etc. I made the mistake of telling her to not throw away any of my cellar or pipes if I get hit by a bus. She asked "why, what's it worth?" uh uh ...
