I love Orientals and enjoyed the first Presby tin I opened and jarred up, but I have zero clue how old it is. I have since added a few to my cellar that have various labels, indicating that I have a couple of different vintages. I'll have to dig around and see if I can fix a date on them before opening my next to compare.

On a side note, the limited-release Presbyterian Reformation blend is claimed to be merely Sutliff Mocha Strips in a tin: Presbyterian Reformation, Bulk Equivalent? :: Pipe Tobacco Discussion - https://pipesmagazine.com/forums/threads/presbyterian-reformation-bulk-equivalent.101993/

Pelican was a favorite and I’m sorry I didn’t stock up on that years ago. That kind of got me started on oriental forward light Latakia blends. Samuel Gawith X blend got no love but was ver good and different.

Ah I forgot about Pelican. I liked that head-and-shoulders better than any of the other blends discussed in this thread. I think I have a little still jarred -- will have to revisit soon.

Pelican was great, yeah.

I have nothing positive to say about Gawith right now, they are clearly using a latakia that bears little resemblance to the past versions, and it's watered down their English blends terribly. Happily I have lots of Skiff and Commonwealth from "the good old days".

side note, was there ever a substitute for the gawith chocolate flake? I always found that to be a smoooth smoke. Although i thought the flavor good, but unflavored would have been a keystone option.

I was sniffing in the tine today, and it is a rather peat mossy and smoke thing. The paper wrapper looks like it was used to filter a pot of coffee.

Presby is excellent - imho - and, by my palate EXTREMELY light on the Latakia. I think of it as Dunhill's Durbar jr. And, since Durbar is a thing of the past :::insert a huge sad sigh here:::, Presby is the next nearest smoking experience to Durbar you are likely to find, in my personal smoking experience. You certainly can't go wrong giving it a try. - Sherm Natman
