I've only bought two actually new briar pipes, the rest have been either cobs or estates. The latest is a KW billiard that has a pre-carb, i assume, the bowl was lined with black when I got it, anyway I've read posts about the funky flavor going away after the first few bowls, but it hasnt yet & I'm on about the 9-10th bowl. Shouldnt the taste be gone by now?

Never had pre-carb give me a funky taste. Stain, yes.. pre-carb.. never noticed it. I smoked through the pre-carbs without problem. But maybe I just don't taste it ...
I'd clean shank and swab the inside of bowl (if you have no cake yet) with everclear. Let it rest for a couple of days.

I'm just wondering... is the "black" shiny or dull?

It might be that the pipe is dip finished.

I too, have never had any problem with a pre-carbonated bowl.

The other thought I had was: I wonder if the manufacturer is using a "new" formula to carbonize the bowl.

The black was shiny..the first time I smoked it, half bowl, it was BAD, now I've moved to full bowls with it. The first half of the bowl is normal, then there's a slightly odd flavor. The last quarter of the bowl is almost like plastic burning. I just smoked it so it'll have to wait, but ill clean it up & try to get some pics, assuming it still looks the same as new. After that first smoke I cleaned the bowl with alcohol, hoping that would help.

I think I'll also try to e-mail kaywoodie direct & see if they have heard of this before...I don't suppose anyone has ever tried to contact them?

There was another pipe where I got this one that looked the same inside, I'll go by there tomorrow & get a pic of it if its still there. I'll also clean mine up for comparison.

What alcohol ?? Anything drinkable ?
My philosophy.... if I don't drink it, I don't want it touching my pipes

Others use it... I don't...but regardless I would scrub the shank with it. Then let it dry for a minimum of 48 hours. If it is stain in the bowl and you've smoked 10 bowls in it, I'm not quite sure how to handle that. I've only been smoking for about a year solid, so there may be more expert guys here that can help you.
But cleaning the shank and stem thoroughly is not going to hurt anything.

I used to be hesitant about buying a pre-carbed pipe...

I used to think it was just another way to cover up pits and such.

I have three or four I guess, but I can't remember which ones they are.

As for the "Shiny" answer to my query...

I wonder if it's (heaven forbid) shellac or varnish...

If it is real glossy, you might consider sanding it out.

Cotton balls soaked with 99% grain will pull the stain out, don't get any on the outside of the bowl.
Pre-carb bowls do not bother me anymore, the last Peterson I bought had one, it smoked fine from day one. I bought a new Sav the other day that did not, again smoked fine. I think a lot is made of something that will not bother you if you smoke slowly. OTOH the OP seems to have a stained bowl, and that will taste bad indeed. The salt method might help as well, for this but I am not sure.

I've changed my mind about pre-carbs. In the future I'll always remove it before the first smoke. Once you've gone bare wood you can never go back.

never a prob with pre-carb bowls, no diff in taste for me. i do have a cob, however that for the first 5-8 bowls tasted like burned plastic when i got to the bottom of the bowl. That is gone now tho and smokes just fine.

Update: I sanded the inside of the bowl, cotton ball soaked with 99% alcohol for about 10 hrs, dried it with paper towel, went for everclear & burned the bottom of the bowl, then cleaned bowl stem & bit with everclear, & let it rest until 2 hrs ago, smoked it all the way to the bottom with no taste issues. Thanks for all the help! :D
