I have quite a few old Grabows,& Kaywoodies. Great smokers all of them.

Also love my Blatter and Blatter, Brighams, and my one Ehrlich Pipe.

Many older brands of pipes are wonderful smokers, and well made.

I have many custombilts, most smoke well, some of the seconds lines not so much. A couple yello bole's , kaywoodies, an erhlich which is a great smoker, a weber. It is easy to find good smoking american pipe.

rigmedic, if you watch ebay you can still get a custombilt for that price pretty easily. Heck i picked a good one up yesterday for 15 bucks shipped and it is in good shape.

Great thread! I love the history behind the old brands and, as has been said, they are almost always great smokers at a value price.
FWIW, those unclocked (misaligned) screw-in stems can also be reset by heating the stinger up to loosen them in the stem and then gently and in small increments turning the stinger to get it all lined back up.

Dr Grabow was the first pipe I bought, granted its not 20+ years old but the area I bought it there is no pipe store just cigarette stores and a walmart. I picked up a collector 2003 that was on sale and still have it. I still look for older pipes and recently found a nice little weber that I had never heard of till I saw it.
Great post and happy hunting to all for the older pipes. I know I'll continue the quest.

What an excellent post, Joe! I have many of the brands named and always encourage the new smokers here to fill out their rotation with classic briar.
Whitney's Old Briar is a swell read and a very affordable download.
I enjoy hearing everybody's memories of the great old names like Edwards, Bertram, Weber and Ehrlich. And I've been told that LL Bean burners are quite the catch. They usually sell in the 30 to 50 buck range on the Bay.
I would imagine you built one hell of a stable for a c-note. Why not throw us a picture? In fact, how about a "Show Us Your American Production Pipes" thread? As much as I've enjoyed seeing all the beautiful collections here the last few weeks, these old beaters are certainly deserving of their own post.

Newcombe is right -- there's some great old American pipes out there. Look for old Wilke's, they are very good as well.
