Vegas Baby!!!
I love Virginias, VaPers and my Briars. My go to smoke is a combo of Virginia and Briar, but lately I've supplanted my rotation of straight Virginia or VaPers with a litany of OTC blends.
Interestingly enough I avoided OTCs because in the very beginning I tasted nothing but cigarettes, which is funny, because I've never smoked cigarettes.
But in my recent progression through some OTCs I tried Prince Albert in my briars and meers and really hit it off. Done. Sold. PA is in the rotation.
Then my next adventure lead to Carter Hall. I tried it in my meers and it was just weird. I kinda got the cigarette experience. Then I tried it in my Briars.... pretty good but nothing to get really excited about. I was going to write it off and while running errands today I pulled the Dagner Cob Poker from my truck console and fired it up. Shazam!! I picked up tons of flavor.
I find the whole thing surprising because I actually haven't had that fond of an experience with cobs. I really prefer my Briars and Meers to my cobs anyday of the week.
So, in closing if for no other reason my cobs are OTC burners.
Oh, and PA, tasted better in a meers and briars.

Hmmmm I still have some Carter Hall, from a pack I accidentally bought off some guy (god knows how he got it). I must give it a shot in a cob ... like ash, me being mostly a briar guy.

I started with a drug store MM Legend and some OHM I was using for rolling my own cigs and the first CODGER blend I found to be rewarding was Sir Walter Raleigh.

I then went on an exploration of these venerable blends and found that although in the beginning of each new variety I found them lacking, after several bowls over time I discovered their redeeming attributes.

The one my palate and technique had most difficulty with is Half and Half. Bitey as hell.

If you want a flavor experience, try Carter Hall & Prince Albert mixed 50/50. Let in marry in a jar for a month and your taste buds will explode. I smoke the mix in a large bowl cob and I find the flavors come out better.

Other blends that really ring in a cob for me are PC Log Cabin, D&R Two Timer, SWR Aromatic, and Iwan Ries Three Star Blue. Anything codger-like seems to step up in a MM cob.

Interesting how certain blends taste better depending on the material of pipe they are smoked it. I've heard that cobs impart a certain sweetness to blends, is that the case with Carter Hall?

I have about a dozen MM cobs and I bounce between them and my briars pretty much daily. I can almost always tell a difference in the way they smoke. The briars can get a little picky about what tobacco to what pipe etc. but the cobs don’t care. A guaranteed good smoke with the cobs and my go to for an easy, mindless smoke. And yes, CH and PA or any of the codger blends always go in a cob for me. The other big plus is I don’t give two shits about scorching the rim and they don’t require long drawn out cleanings. Pipe cleaner, throw it in the rack until next time.

I love Carter Hall and it is magnificent in cobs. I also have some Chatham Manor but have yet to try it.

To me, briars have a special way with Virginias and English/Balkan blends, but cobs have a special understanding of burley and burley Cavendish. No rules on this, and the opposite blends can give superb smokes, but for dependability, this rule of thumb often works for me. And for clarity and discernment on any single leaf or blend, Meerschaum is the best...as I am learning with my first Meer courtesy of fishnbanjo.

Vapers and burleys excel in a cob according to my taste buds. Latakia for me, is reserved for briars. Meers, anything goes haha

More often than not, I start my Saturday morning off with Carter Hall in a Country Gentleman. Just gets the weekend off to a good start.
