Pots vs. Stacks.

I'm not the biggest fan of pots, but that's a great looking pipe. I really like Musico pipes and have been eager to get another - hopefully soon. There's a lovat I've had my eye on.

Never have been a big fan, but I've tried just about everything else. I wanted one 5" or less, with a chamber no bigger than .75.
Count on Musico - he really hits the nail on my head with his pipe dimensions and the prices make them a terrific value.

Friend gave me an old Sasieni Windsor Pot that was a hair over 5" with a nice blast, just needed cleaning up. Unfortunately the oxidation on the stem is VERY stubborn. I had to give up, lest I took off too much material. So now it just sits. I'll pass it along to someone that wants a project.

Thats my thing also as far as musico - great price point, and almost always within my favored dimensions. Oddly enough, I don't see much love for him on the forum

I think there's a majority contingent of pipe smokers that shop in that price range and prefer Danish style designs and/or larger pipes.

I often think back to when I began immersing myself in pipes. Browsing on SPC, to amateur eyes it seemed like there was a glut of "normal" looking pipe shapes - ranging in price from $100 - $1000, could there really be that big a difference between a couple straight billiards?!
Freehands and oddballs certainly grabbed my attention early, but experience lead me to appreciate simplicity executed masterfully.

Perhaps the Foundation by Musico pipes get overlooked because of their price point?

Both very valid statements and I couldn't agree more. Though picking a pipe based on a price point is just beyond me.

Yep, for me stacks smoke way longer, even if they hold less tobacco than a pot. And, if the stack is tapered it ads even more smoking time. I love both style for this reason. I smoke my stronger tobaccos in pots and Virginias in tapered stacks.

I've become a big fan of taller and narrower. Especially with GH flakes, the stack seems to burn forever. Just ordered a new Peterson 313 based on that. I'll probably use my 303 for ribbon and the 313 for flake.

Stacks bring out the flavors of lightly topped blends, for instance, I think St. Bruno & Erinmore Flake taste best in a stack. I’m thinking about getting another one to dedicate to the Saint. Ropp has some amazing pipes and great stacks for surprisingly inexpensive prices.

I’ll post a pot vs stack on the WAYS thread later this afternoon - smoking the same blend in both.

What I have noticed is that a lot of pots may pot-SHAPED, but the chambers are similarly sized as billiards.
Where they differ is having much thicker walls giving them that “pot profile”

Well, sure stack smokes faster. But I prefer wide, deep chamber. As matter of a fact, anything wide. Gives me better smoke. More "full", if that makes any sense.

Interesting smoking the same blend (MacBaren’s HH Arcadian Perique) out of a pot and stack

The pot, because of its wider surface area gave a much airier smoke. I suppose I could have filled it much more densely

The stack gave a fuller flavoured smoke, which I preferred

Yes, this might be an extreme example, a Northern Briars pot that has a 3/4" chamber. Still smokes like a dream though.
