Title edited for caps and clarity.

Do pots smoke faster than stacks (assuming same chamber volume and rate of puffing)?
Thnx
Mike

I've been smoking stacks for most of our walks lately and not having to refill bowls. Just wondering why.

And I'm ignorant about physics and combustible material. I figure the surface area of a wide pot burns more material in the same amount of time than a narrow stack. But maybe I'm wrong on this. I am on lots of stuff :)). Plus. I wonder if some pot smokers light on side of the bowl surface and not so much the other-sort of rotating the quadrant or half of burning bowl (thought I read something about that once - Pease?)? In this way prolonging the pot longevity. Just wondering-- and if I learn something with this I may give my pots or big billiards another try during our walks 😀

Sure, in theory you're right. And in actual smoking you are right. There are many factors that will increase or decrease the Delta on that. So, some won't notice and others might be shocked.

I've never been to a slow smoking contest but I've read about some pipe clubs hosting them. Now I wonder if the majority of folks entering smoke stacks? Without firsthand or anecdotal data, I'm guessing pipe people smoke all kinds of pipes-- and I also wonder if most "winners" smoke stacks (disclaimer - I know of no such upcoming contests and am not planning on finding one to enter 😀). Just pondering since i got done mowing the yard. I also guess that the joy and camaraderie experienced at them actually makes everyone a winner! I feel like a winner every time I pack a bowl and light up, personally.

From the little I've seen online, they are all given the same iteration of pipe...

If you're on walks, the wind most likely has greater effect on the pot than the stack... making it burn up faster.
Hadn't thought of that-thnx. You gotta be right! And my wind screen from SP is too small for my Castello 55 Por and justbfalls in when I've tried it 😀LOL

No choice. They hand you an unsmoked pipe that looks the same as the other 50. But we know they don't all smoke the same. Differences, I am guessing aren't more than 1% due mostly to changes in briar.

I've always been drawn to the tall and narrow as opposed to the shallow and wide.
Of course, I don't smoke English blends and those are typically associated with Pots and wide bowls.

Still, I do enjoy some complex blends with dark fired and various orientals. I've been searching for a Pot that fits my desired measurements for almost a year - and I finally found it and ordered it this week. Finally a Pot I can enjoy!

In a slow smoke contest, all contestants are furnished the "exact" same pipe.

Really?!? They are given a pipe? I did not know that, and I have been smoking a pipe for decades. I admit to never having investigated much about a pipe smoking contest, though. The only thing I knew was they were given the same amount of the same type of pipe tobacco, and the same number of matches (3, I believe…. one for a possible broken match, one for a charring light, and one for a final light).

But…. being given a new pipe to smoke that you are not used to…. would seem to make a contest like that awfully damn difficult. Anytime I smoke a new (to me) pipe…. there is a leaning curve on how it behaves.

I'm not the biggest fan of pots, but that's a great looking pipe. I really like Musico pipes and have been eager to get another - hopefully soon. There's a lovat I've had my eye on.
Nice score

Yep, contestants get a new pipe to smoke in pipe contests. Normally it isn't more than a basket pipe but sometimes the pipe is really nice.
