I don't know what it is about Speckled Hen but I don't get on with it at all.
Funnily enough, there are a good few porter and stout drinkers in the Nottingham pipe community.

Bob, my paternal family come from that neck of the woods. Eastwood, Greasley, Brinsley etc. I have no idea what they drank but my grandfather had the Cross Keys at Worksop very many moons ago :puffy:
Speckled Hen is a bit on the sweet side for me, I prefer more of a hoppy brew.
Regards,
Jay.

I just read the OP again where Simon states...
"I've always thought that plugs, years ago would have been the go-to tobacco for the 'working man'. They were then, unlike now cheaper than flakes & ready rubbed mixtures."
...I'm not sure where you buy your plugs and flakes from Simon but at Mysmokingshop.com all their Sam Gawith plugs are cheaper than their flake counterparts. Flake = £12.89 per 50g and Plug = £12:40 per 50g and their Gawith and Hoggarth are both at £12:15.
Granted, Erinmore and Condor are hideously expensive and only available from Ireland.
Am puzzled
Regards,
Jay.

Sorry chaps, been working away for a few days & offline. Browsing this thread & realising forgot to mention what it's like to smoke. @davet, no intention to tease. Honest!

Don't really do reviews, lack of patience, keyboard skills & a tongue like leather curtail ones ambition in that field!

First off, I shall say it's one of the most refined & high quality tobaccos I've had. What's in it? Don't know for certain, but I'm going to put my neck on the line & say I reckon it's all Virginia!

There could well be a smidgen of Kentucky or a touch of cavendish, but I couldn't taste any. I would be unwilling to accept anyone telling me there's perique in there.

It's a simple but very fine medium strength Virginia. Toppings? No, with tobacco this fine they wisely left it as it is.

Is it the best plug I've tried? No. Is it the best Virginia I've tried? Yes, by far. Hopefully someone who used to smoke this, will chime in & give his opinion.
