This sort of thing has been happening since humans first walked upright, of course.
The mass killing of female students in their apartment even has a precedent. (The total was EIGHT, though, and they were kept in a locked room and brought out and killed one at a time.)
Upon reading Speck's criminal history the only amazing part is that he was allowed to remain in society long enough to commit mass murder. Something like it was inevitable.
Regarding giving such creatures endless chances to "reform themselves", "see the light", and so forth, I have only this to say to such believers in Human Goodness:
You agree to let me use a magic wand that guarantees you and/or your family & loved ones are the victim of any crimes that this person might commit after being released back into society.
No negotiating or re-wind button after the fact no matter how serious, gruesome, or horrible those crimes might be, either. No time machine. The magic wand will merely shift reality a nudge so that YOU become the victim. Everything else proceeds normally.
Do we have a deal?
Because if you say no, you aren't empathic, kind-spirited, and forgiving at all... you just like the self-satisfied high you get from imagining that you are. You like it so much, in fact, that you are willing to inflict catastrophic hell on someone else in order to feel it.
