"why can't we live in a world were we could just smoke out pipes, get great tobacco cheap, and be happy"
Government Regulation. Period. That's why.

No B&M where I am either. Local smoke shops carry Prince Albert, Carter Hall, etc., as well as some corn-cob pipes. I don't really mind too much. The only thing that bothers me is not being able to hold and handle any pipes I might want to buy. I still have yet to order a pipe on-line, and I'm going on four years piping. My fiance ordered me a pipe last year- a Golden Gate bulldog. It's a fine pipe, smokes great... just can't seem to be able to pull the trigger on anything myself.
I used to have a B&M within driving distance; but, they recently became a pizza parlor, after the neighboring businesses (hoity-toity faux high-end fashion shops) patrons, complained incessantly about the odor. Kind of a fcked up reason to change businesses if you ask me. The owner of the B&M was quoted in a local newspaper as having said they were doing fine financially.

texmex, I'm a half hour from Syracuse. Which B&M were you suggesting? I know them all, and they are mostly into cigars. Unless a new one has opened I don't know about.

I have a tobacconist about 5 blocks away from me. We are close friends. I work there when he gets busy and I get paid in tobacco. It's also one of the only places in Illinois one can still smoke. I'm doing fine, but I'm sorry for your predicament:)

I just went to Mallory's in Armory square. It is small, and has a very limited selection. Their Sutliff tins where about $18 per 50g tin. Their price per ounce on the bulk was decent $5-9. They only had three english blends and a burley as well as all the normal aromatic offerings. I was offered a sample bowl and took one of their house English which is a nice mix with a fair amount of perique. It was smooth and a little peppery with a nice smokyness to it. I can't remember the name at the moment. I also bought an oz of Burley light without a bite, as I've been wanting to try a straight burley for a while. They had a lower to middle end pipe selection but it was minimal. The owner was pleasant and moderately knowladgable about the blends and pipes in general. I get up to the 'cuse only once in a while but I might make this a stop if for no other reason than to support a B&M. Worth the stop for a bowl and nice conversation.

I've got a B&M about 5 minutes from my office. I don't know who or why anyone would pay their prices for tinned tobacco that can be bought online for at least 30% less with free shipping if you buy in quantity.

I live in MA, so I know what you're talking about exactly. Terrible place to work and live, but I'm trapped.
As to the tobacconist issue, I'm relatively lucky. I have a decent B&M about 15 mins from my work, so I can go at lunch. There are a number of "tobacco stores" in the area, but really, they're just head shops with a so-so selection of cigars and PA in a can. I go to the B&M often enough that I don't feel guilty, but do a fair bit of ordering online too.

I have a B&M 45 minutes away from me, but like most the prices are expensive, and they mostly focus on cigars and e-vapor stuff now. Not a bad lounge at all, and I do frequent their place for wi-fi and a comfortable smoking lounge. They have a lounge membership, so I feel no pressure to purchase items from them.
Sounds like most of us are in the same predicament! Thank goodness for the internet.

I have my Tinderbox here in Tacoma. They are more cigar but do their best with pipes and pipe tobacco. Bulk isn't bad and they have tins, but the taxed kill them on those.
I am moving next year down near Portland, Or and things are better there. 2 decent B&M's there and the taxes are 65% i think instead of 95%.
I like mail order, but it is illegal here, so one has to think outside the box, so to speak.

I live 93 miles from the nearest tobacco shop. They carry two brands of pipe tobacco, its actually a cigar shop. Its only cigarettes they are selling here in stores. Peterson balkan delight 50g cost 48 USD
Guess which country?
PS:50g is 1,7oz

I'm always torn between wanting to support my local B&M and wanting to buy three tins of tobacco online for

what I'd pay for one at the B&M, if you buy tins on sale. Just received a cigar catalog and am amazed at the

difference between 20 good cigars and a tin of high quality pipe tobacco that will render at least 25 bowls.

It's often six times or more for the cigars. Also, seems like I have a lot more control with the pipe tobacco;

I can mix blends and get 100 mixes for the price of twenty blends.
I feel like I'm in a fool's paradise in terms of tobacco prices, so much less in the U.S. than other places, for now

anyway.
