On finer restaurants you sometimes get a palate cleanser between courses and I suggest to study the subject. An alternative for me, is to buzz the mouthpiece on my altotrombone or simply play a few tunes. It works as a good palate cleanser every time. However, lighting up your pipe after buzzing, may not make you popular among the other diners. Best to practise at home.

I’m having a blend right now that tastes quite a bit different and not in the best way because I’m also having some apple cider and a mix of raisins, peanuts and butterscotch chips. Lesson learned!!

Although I have a lot of pipes with large bowls and stems that I enjoy smoking, I find them to be more finicky than pipes with medium bowls and slim stems that that are easy to clench. I think it's because it's easier to keep the ember smoldering and let the smoke trickle into your mouth when the pipe stays put.
