Evening all -
I just picked up an estate Savinelli, black sandblasted. The finish is rather dull, even cloudy white in some of the crevices. Any tips for getting it looking new - product or technique?

Dead skin or old wax buildup… scrub the surface clean, then brush on Halcyon wax let it dry for about 1/2 hour and brush it with horse hair shoe brush. Rinse and repeat.

I like to clean my estates with Murphy’s oil soap and a tooth brush then wax them and buff with a brush. I use a boar hair brush but thats only because that’s what I have.

Just be sure not to harm any markings on the pipe.

Before you go all out just try a fuzzy microfiber cloth. Old wax likes to be rewarmed with polishing and you will lift the dirt. You have to do it before new wax regardless of the results.

Hot tap water and an old toothbrush will remove the dirty wax and crud build up and provide a clean surface for the application of new wax.

OTH, you might see what a light coat of mineral oil looks like, and you can apply wax after if you don't like it.

Renaissance Wax. Then finish with tooth pick on the spot that caked on. Don't usually bother polishing rusticated and sandblasted. Too much work.

Just to reenforce what JPM said. Get a toothbrush for your pipes. Even better, get a cheap electric toothbrush. A little soap and water and a toothbrush does wonders for cleaning pipes. When you get the Halcyon wax, put a little in your palms and rub it into the briar. Then wipe the pipe down.

Looks like wax buildup to me. I've actually used a soft flame and repeated wiping with a soft cloth to remove it. And maybe a toothbrush. Can't remember exactly, but it seemed to work on an estate that I picked up somewhere, probably ebay. Had it not worked, I would have tossed it. It was gross, and didn't show in the half-assed photos.

I'd start by spending an hour polishing with a slightly abrasive cloth, a jeweler's cloth or new bandana with sizing in it, or even a paper towel. Do this watching TV or otherwise distracted so it doesn't get boring. If it still looks grungy, follow the more assertive methods in the previous posts. I think the initial work by hand will get you well along toward the finish you want.

If it is just wax, dirty wax, moldy wax, hot tap water does the trick cheaply and easily. Perhaps a touch of detergent and the scour side of a dish sponge if really thick.
