Someone probably pulled the stinger out. Every old pipe in France has a stinger and they still sell them in a pack for self installation. I dont know that anyone likes them. I guess in their time they were ok but if you want to filter nothing beats a 9mm. I like filters and I still pull them out of every pipe I get used. A bunch of the old ones threaded their way in.

I like the 'stingers' on the Chicago made Grabow's when Linkman's was making them.
I smoke mostly 'rescue' pipes. I think that it helps me to value them if I've done a little work on them to get them smokeable.

I've had good results from a small spherical burr in a Dremel. I like the way it looks anyway...
Burr is rather small, shank in the pic is 1/8 in dia. My work around the border could be a bit more precise.

I've not done a whole pipe, just partials to cover up preexisting flaws in briar. It will have to try a complete rustication at some point. I think it would come out nice.
