Is it plume or mold? I can't imagine a properly closed tin lets tobacco to plume but what do i know?

The only mold I ever saw was round, puffy, fuzzy and very bad smelling; and the tin had been stored above 75°F.

It didn't look like the stuff in your picture. Yours looks like the dried oils or resins released from the leave.

IMO if it doesn't smell bad, it's probably good to smoke.

Just because you bought the tin yesterday doesn't mean that the tin was packaged recently. I've gotten tins from pipes and cigars that were more than 2 years old. Maybe you got an old tin from the back of the shelf.....is there a date code on the tin?

Nope, nothing about date on the tin. It has been lying on the shelf min. for a year as the tobacconist said. He said its plume and i should not be worried but i dont count on somebody gaining money from it.

Looks like plume to me. The fact that it is only on individual flakes, and doesn't spread from Flake to Flake tells me that it is NOT mould.
Smoke and enjoy!

It isn't plume but it isn't mold either. I heard an explanation regarding that stuff some time ago but can't recall specifics. It isn't bad, dangerous or even necessarily related to age. Smoke the tobacco and fear not.

Same here ... some light powder used to keep the blades from getting too sticky, I think.

I had a tin of 1792 that had the exact same thing. I had no problem smoking it. If you're still concerned you can send an email with the picture to Samuel Gawith and ask for their explanation. I sure would like to hear it.

Long story short, plume is the oils precipitating out of the tobacco and crystallizing on the surface.

Funny, I opened some H&H Frenchy's Sunzabitches...which was HEAVILY "bourbon-laced" this time...noticed a few similar spots. I smoked it a anyways. Wouldn't stress it too much.

Gotta go with Cortez here.

Hey I had the exact same stuff on some SG balkan flake a couple of years ago, I think I remember other people saying it was not uncommon on SG flakes...

I popped the top on a jar last weekend and noticed something that looks just like that, I don't remember it being that way when I jarred it but it's been awhile. I smoked a couple of bowls anyway without any negative effects. I am interested to know what it is.

northernneil makes an excellent observation:

While I would not say it is plume so to speak as you would see on aged cigars, it is not mold. Mold is fluffy and hairy. If you can easily wipe it off, probably mold. I am not an expert on this but to me it looks like crystalized sugars from the compressed leaf.
