It's one of my all time favorites.
It's not what I want all of the time -- I'm limiting latakia these days, as I sense that I'm at risk of burnout if I'm not careful.
But, this blend strikes me as one of the most harmoniously complex and complexly harmonious mixtures available. The Virginia base is actually noticeable, it's naturally sweet, the condimentals all play their lines in complementary ways... It's great.
I definitely wish that it were a bit heavier on the orientals -- that would take it closer to perfection, for me.
Some have compared it to Penzance. That's a mistake. Both are great and both are balkans, but that doesn't mean that one is like the other. If I were going to be stranded on a desert island and had to choose between the two, I'd choose Penzance. It's wonderful on a whole other level.
But I smoke Plum Pudding much more often than I smoke Penzance because the latter is expensive and hard to find, so I make my stash stretch by smoking it on special occasions.
I recently (finally) tried both Plum Pudding Special Reserve and Plum Pudding Bourbon Barrel Aged.
My take is that the SR is a bit different and worth paying the extra for once... but I'm not yet certain that it's so much better that it's worth paying the extra for regularly.
The Bourbon Barrel comes off as an altogether different tobacco, and I love it. The flavor of the bourbon is stronger than I expected, and it works with PP extremely well. I want both PP and PP-BBA around, and would treat them as two different tobaccos.
