I like Virginia tobaccos and also like them a little less dry. I find that a lot of what I smoke loses flavor if dried too much, but this is me. Most people do dry their tobacco out a little before smoking. Just in case you're wondering, yes, I do dry FVF out quite a bit before smoking.
Also, I find that when you sip a pipe that if you keep the tip of your tongue away from the draft hole that it can help cut down on tongue bite a bit. I do this when my tongue is a little raw to keep it from getting worse. Lastly, the pipe smoker's tongue toughens up with regular smoking and it becomes less resistant to bite. At least, this has been my experience. When I'm frequently smoking, meaning everyday, I don't encounter tongue bite much; but when I'm smoking less often, maybe a few times a week or on and off through the month, I tend to get tongue bite more.
