I buy high quality pipes. I buy high quality tobacco. I pack lightly and smoke gently.
Seems no matter what I do, I always wind up with a little (about 10- 20%) wet dottle at the bottom of the bowl.
What's the secret? Or is this appropriate ?
Thanks in advance....

Welcome top the forum!

Are we talking aero's? Maybe the baccy is just a bit too wet. Try drying for 15-20 minutes and see if that helps.

Moisture levels on the tobacco, humidity in area in which your

smoking, smoking a little too fast all might contribute to this...

but at the end of the day I wouldn give it too much thought,

normal sometimes to have this happen...you could always run

a pipe cleaner throughout the smoke to help this

Happens to many of us. Depending on the tobacco, especially with aros, it's not uncommon. If it bugs you, I'd try this:

1) either load less in the bowl so the moisture / steam doesn't get a chance to collect at the bottom since you'll be done smoking the pipe before it does

2) either let the tobacco dry out like the other guys said
Me, I couldn't care less if there's a little dottle left in the bottom. It can get bitter or harsh if you try to smoke it. I dump it out, on to the next bowl :puffpipe:

If your aro is wet, microwave it for 5 to 10 seconds on paper plate, watch out if you have a powerful microwave, and don"t let your wife catch you doing this as my wife did HaHa the old cajun

Thanks for the advice. I smoke English blends. But I do smoke outdoors....which means very high humidity in my area (East Coast). I'll try drying it out a bit, as suggested. It doesn't bother me much...I just dump & reload. But I just worry I'm not getting enough "cake" at the bottom of the bowl.....how much does that really matter?
Thanks for all your replies.

Cake is another one of those matters of opinion. A little of it will help protect the briar, but I keep cake to a minimum usually. If you want to build cake in the heel, load a half bowl and smoke that. It should go to the bottom then, unless the airway is not all the way at the bottom of the heel either and then you never get cake at the bottom.
Above all, don't stress ;-)

Thanks. I have a thin, even cake and my pipe smokes well. I guess that's all that matters.
Thanks again for all the advice.

If your never smoke your pipe to the bottom then there's really no use for cake down there.
If the dottle worries you so much, smoke a pipe with a smaller chamber.
If you can still get 10% wet dottle while smoking in a prince then you must be smoking in a waterpark. :puffy:

I dry my tobacco a good half hour to hour and still I will get a little dottle depending on the blend. I do smoke a lot outside in the heat here in Florida so it is to be expected. I smoke a lot of flakes and they tend to leave a bit.
