I smoke both Cigs and pipe, I hate the fact that i smoke Cigs and im trying to become an exclusive pipe smoker so if you can cut Cigs out entirely i say go for it and do what you need to do to become pipe Exclusive. Spend what you need to spend in the long run if it stops you from smoking cigarettes its worth it.

As for pipes I don't really smoke a cob much but for your application i would get one or two to try out different blends.
I wouldn't bother with the drug store briar as they tend to get really hot, if you want to try a briar i would look into estate pipes but you need to learn how to properly clean them first. But that would be part of the hobby and alot of fun.
