Hi guys, I have just returned to my pipe after many years, (I used to smoke Balken Sobrani. so that will give you and idea of not only my age, but my tobacco preferences.) just got myself s couple of new pipes from 'Carey's', (now rapidly closing down)
and got a couple of packs of tobacco, one a Carey's blend and the other a 'Holger Danske Double fermented", both of which were complete shots in the dark, but are not bad to my untutored palette. I would appreciate any advice that you could give me to enable me to make an "Informed" purchase when i run out of tobacco. kindest regards. Roy

Welcome back to the pipe. You can go to Pipes and Cigars and buy in "bulk", meaning any amount you want. This makes the risk lower, as you can purchase just a few ounces of a myriad of options. The tobacco comes in a ziplock bag rather than a tin. Buy a whole bunch at the same time and they will ship together. That way you can sample a whole bunch over a few weeks and nail down a few you really enjoy. This is a strategy I have used many times. I have been blending my own lately, using some of the bulk tobaccos from Pipes and Cigars. Not costly at all. Cheers!

Thank you Gentlemen, I appreciate your instant response, but I think I may have, (as we say in England) 'Dropped a clanger', and joined a USA based forum. I am in the north of England. please forgive my mistake.
kindest regards to you all. I have many fond memories of studying Barbershop Harmony at Missouri Western State College. Roy.

Welcome from NE FL. Don’t leave yet! There are quite a few international members and some in your own backyard. Someone can give you the local slant soon.

Welcome from just outside of New Orleans, Louisiana!

I am a big fan of Balkan blends myself, so I'll suggest some that haven't been mentioned.

G.L. Pease Westminster is very good, supposedly similar to the older version of Dunhill London Mixture. I think it has a bit more depth than the current version.
Peterson London Mixture, the current version, is also very good
Peterson Balkan Delite is a solid Balkan that is often overlooked.
My current favorite, though, is Cornell & Diehl Rajah's Court, which is supposed to be similar to the old version of Dunhill Durbar.

It doesn't matter that you live in the U.K., there are other members from outside the U.S. and we're very nice to everyone. Plus the mods shut down threads that start to get too heated. Just watch out for that BROBS guy. I've heard rumors of unspeakable evils flowing from his keyboard. Also be wary of Cosmicfolklore, as he has made statements which implied that he likes Jackson Pollock.:ROFLMAO:

Welcome from Vegas!

I've been enjoying a lot of Mac Baren and Peterson Blends, there's also Boswells tobacco blends for aromatics. They all ship!

Stick around, Roy. No clanger has been dropped. You found the best pipe forum here. North West or North East? I'm an ex-pat Geordie exiled in Scotland.

My advice would be for anything you consider a necessity of secondary priority. (when running out of food, looking for food, number 1).

Stock up on your favorite tobacco. Make sure you have a way to keep it at the right humidity. Don't let your stores" go unattended." Make sure you pamper those tobacco stores. make sure there are proper environmental controls of the tobacco you keep.

For example, I'm a huge smoker of Early Morning Smoke by Peterson's. Those tins are sealed and good for a good long time unless the tin is damaged. I have 5 tins unsealed, as I use 1 tin unsealed.

The reasoning being, if they stop producing the blend, I have some time to adjust to a new blend.

I think a selection of one ounce bulk baggies might give you a good sampling to try. Brands like Peter Stokkebye, Lane, Sutliff, and Cornell & Diehl (especially if you like burley as a base or condiment), will give you a wide range of bulk offerings. Sutliff makes a Balkan Sobranie 759 match. I wouldn't buy anything in quantities, even if you like it, and jar those you don't like, to try again later. Study the constituent tobaccos in blends to judge what you might like.
