They’ve been out for awhile. I haven’t decided if I like them or not—it might be the rib at the end of the stem that bothers me—it looks like a condom and breaks up the line of the pipe. But, I do like the bright stems—they’re fun and playful.
It's that bump at the end of the stem that really puts them into the Playskool realm. It looks like a safety feature.

I just looked at current Playskool toys and man, what krap! I grew up with the Playskool toys when they were all wood that sometimes had brightly colored bits in plastic. The furniture in my Kindergarten was the same way. Clear finished wood, sparse use of bright, primary color plastics. It really set an aesthetic for me from early on.

My father was an an amateur woodworker of considerable aesthetic and craft skill, did lots of really nice things around the house and for friends. I love his style. He tried making chairs, but it wasn't working out to his satisfaction. So he eventually bought a set of Nakashima chairs direct form George Nakashima, who gave us a tour of his shop and wood shed. My father and Mr. Nakashima talked about wood for quite a while. I'm proud to have those chairs now.

He also made me this menorah, from the trunk of a pear tree that was in our backyard.
