I don’t know at what price level you are guaranteed not to get a pit, but it’s pretty high. With international shipping being what it is, and the impossibility of getting any customs/duty refunded on a returned pipe, I roll the dice and take my chances.

I personally wouldn't worry about it. Barely noticeable.
I paid about 80 USD + shipping for it which I think is a rather low price, the only Peterson carying b&m around here wants 150 USD for a system standard smooth.
As I said earlier I decided to enjoy the pipe and not return it. Brought it with me into the mountains today and christened it with some SG Commonwealth as it will be assigned to Latakia blends. It smoked fine and I think I will be very happy with it.
Most brand new pipes at that pricepoint are going to have pits.. it's just whether they cover it up with some type of artificial finish or not.

haha I know just throwing that out there. A lot of people don't notice them on other pipes because they put such a thick finish over the fills. So actually I appreciate this from Peterson that they leave a more natural finish on the briar than you get with other lower rung pipes.

I'am not a jealous person often. But can we trade mountains please? There are some lovely deer ticks and brambles in our mountains, they're real world class. And they're great for building calf muscles cause they don't just go up for a long ways they roll so it's all up and down all day. Our mountains are shaped like upside down wash basins, so when you are ascending them you spend a couple of hours thinking the top is just ahead of you (because of the line of sight).
that's called a false summit. That can really be a pain. So I guess that just means my offer is more generous then I originally thought.
I have an old 301 standard.There's just something about that particular iconic shape that really attracts me. Think it's 1 of the best looking bent pot shaped pipes around.
80 bucks for a new System is dirt cheap. I’d smoke that sucker!
