Overall price is one thing that really keeps my PAD in check. That being said, if I was willing to spend the money, or had the money, there are some pipes I'd really love to have. Pipes that are more art than anything.
Starting with this guy here:

I don't know what it is about it but I think it's awesome.
Let's see what you would have.

I understand how people appreciate the art or said differently, would purchase a pipe simply for the art perspective. For me, I'm primarily interested in the smoking side of it. In my experience, you reach a point of diminishing returns on that. The additional $ you're spending aren't buying you any improvements in how well it will smoke. If a $1200 pipe would smoke 3x better than a $400 pipe, I'd own $1200 pipes. I've seen zero evidence that is the case. But that's just me.

Other than the two in the pic gifted to me by the carver, all of these were at or above that price point. I would put back money all year for a commission for a birthday present to myself. I'm at a point now where I can't bring myself to buy a $100 pipe, but several online vendors take payments.

I can't figure out the third one from the left. Got another angle on that one?

There you go. I thought you had to smoke that laying on your side at first.

Michael Parks. His pipes are to dream about...I just can't get over his work. Fabulous would be an understatement.

It's been a few years since price was a consideration when purchasing something. That said, I do not expect a pipe to handle tobacco better, dependent on the cost, that's simply ... well, weird thinking. I do expect the silver or gold fittings, should there be any, to fit correctly, be well executed and add to the esthetics of the pipe. I expect expensive pipes to have well cut, comfortable bits, a finish without flaw and the briar/meerschaum to be the essence of perfection, flawless. I still smoke a cob when on the river or in circumstances I deem them suitable.
I've purchased such pipes only hoping they'd smoke well. One doesn't know until a few bowls have been experienced. I do know that a well cut bit, proper proportion and heft make a good pipe more enjoyable. And, a flawless piece of wood, fitting the hand well and enjoyable to the eye also add to the experience of the last two or three bowls in the evening as I wind down from a "tough" day of doing what I love. I do so enjoy my reading time with a glass of port and a pipe, mostly unnoticed, adding to that experience. Could I enjoy less expensive pipes in the same circumstances? Sure but, why should I! All my responsibilities to others have been met and I've earned a bit of self-indulgence.

The top pic looks too much like a nut sack.

 Really been trying to add onto your observation...but these days, well I just don't know what to say. :puffy:

Here
I don't feel compelled to spend good tequila and bike parts money on extravagant pipes. Only two of my pipes have broken triple digits in cost, barely.
That said, this Peter Heeschen pic is the closest I've found.
