All of a sudden, recently I've decided I like cavaliers. Never had an interest in them in decades of pipe smoking. Now all of a sudden, I want one. Have you had an instance were you flipped on a pipe shape? I'm eyeballing this one since it's the type of cavalier I like but it's way out of the price range I'd pay for it.

For the longest time I thought the Nording freehand pipes were ugly. Now, I have been looking at them online for weeks straight!

Just from straights to bents. In my younger days I thought bents looked weird and that just odd people and old guys smoked them. Now I find them quite practical, even preferred, at times. (I didn't think Sherlock was odd; he was cool. But the depiction of him in the movies with a calabash seemed odd, and still does.)

For some reason, I dislike Bulldogs. I love Rhodesians and Authors, but the diamond shank of the Bulldog just puts me off! I’ve owned maybe ten different ones and I’ve traded or sold off every single one. All the more for everyone else.

I was not impressed by the Hungarian when I first saw one. Now, it's one of the shapes on my dwindling list.

Never have. The only shape I've truly disliked is the bulldog and with my collecting days behind me, one will never be in my collection.

I didn't like straight billiards very much until pretty recently. Too Bob Dobbs for me or something. My wife gave me my first pipe ca. 2006, and I was bummed that she didn't know my tastes well enough to get me a blowfish or at least a calabash instead of a straight billiard, so I never much liked the pipe (though I pretended otherwise, of course). Now it's one of my favorite smokers, and I'm always shopping for straight billiards.

Once upon a time I detested the look of panels.

Then I saw one that spoke to me - a little blasted marTelo number with yellow bakelite stem. Something about that pipe made it irresistible to me.
Ever since then I've found panels to be exquisite. Any time I see an old British example I start to drool.

Go figure.

My wife has moved me along to pipes I didn't know I liked. She bought me a Sav 601 churchwarden which I found is the perfect reading pipe. She gave me an Oom-Paul that feels much lighter weight for it's doubled up shank and stem. So yes, I've learned to love some pipes, some on my own actually, that I never tried before -- Meerschaum thanks to the late great fishnbanjo, and bamboo shank thanks to the late renowned carver Bob Hayes. I've never been drawn to Cavaliers, but the one in the OP looks quite nice. It's toned down so it doesn't look quite so theatrical. Some Cav's would make me feel like I was onstage.

Have many, many pipes, mostly smooth. After that, I leave it to what impresses me at the time. NOT crazy about Dublins and yet, my finest old Artisan Pipe is a Dublin. My favorite smokers are my Savinelli 614's, Savinelli Bruna's and Peterson Sherlock Holmes. I've learned to never say, I'll never have that kind or shape...

Oom pauls, full bent billiards, anything contorted for a circus show.
I would describe myself as a straight down the pipe straight pipe guy.

I admire a well-made pipe in almost any shape.
That said, I wouldn't be caught dead smoking most of them. I've seen enough "3 Stooges" movies for a lifetime.

Once upon a time I detested the look of panels.
I keep trying to like them because they intersect at my love of pipes and cheapness (Dunhill panels being the cheapest). But I can't get there. Every time I see them I can't help but think someone shipped a pipe out after roughing it. I own a McCraines house pipe like the one below from when Ashton made their pipes. I got it on clearance and figured it would be a camping pipe, etc. It's hideous but the thing smokes fantastic.

I dislike bent billiards (has to be straight), Oom Pauls, army mounts, Rhodesians (gotta have that diamond shank) and pokers that don't sit.

mso489,

I have that Savinelli 601 too, its a great smoker and its beautiful! Maybe its just me, but it seems to smooth out some of the hotter/wetter tobacco!

Once upon a time I did not like rusticated pipes. Now 2 of my top 5 favorite pipes are rusticated.
I'm not a fan of bulldogs, like others here, but I have seen at least 1 that I did really like and wouldn't mind owning. If it's still where I saw it when I go on vacation in next month I think I'll grab it.
Still don't like panels though the one pictured above is nice.
And the one thing I still cringe at seeing is leaving the root pattern exposed on the rim of smooth pipe:

No. Just no. It looks like it's unfinished.
