Title edited for caps and brevity. See Rule 9.

I was smoking a lot of ribon cut and it burnt fast. As ar result I have a number of not huge, but reasonbly big pipe chambers. Recently Ive changed over to mostly flakes and I find Ive learned to sip a better than the old days of puffing.

Sometimes I use meer chips too if the pipe isnt filtered. They take up space.

Obvioulsy, its a great excuse to buy more pipes but I like the ones I have.

Is there any issue with filing the pipe only about 2/3?

The bonus is that there is less filth on rims but is there any problem with this practice?

Sometimes I fill them most the way and grab them a couple of times a day but I really prefer a fresh bowl on most blends.
If you're indoors and it goes too fast, pack tighter as Embers indicated.

I'm often outdoors and find a larger bowl, packed less than full, may just be the extra assistance needed to prevent the wind from getting all my tobacco before I do.

Yano, I saw you posted that elsewhere. Does it flavor the smoke when it gets hot? Certainly cheaper than meer chips!

I can hear my wife now..."Where is the bag of rice?"
Lol,
I apologize for the delayed reply. I didn't realize until just now that you were asking a follow-up question.
As a general rule, no it does not flavor the smoke when it gets hot or near the bottom. However, one time I kinda pushed it to see what would happen and there was a slight hint of rice in the last puff or two. And the kernels I dumped were golden brown. But again, I was pushing it (for science! )

Related: There was a blog post I saw years ago where someone tested the absorbency of different kinds of rice; the context being about what to do if you accidentally get your phone wet. The tests were informal, but the poster found Basmati rice to be the most absorbent, followed by long grain rice. So, if your looking for a pipe to pair with Chicken Korma, basmati would be the way to go!

You guys know of an entry level priced pipe with a larger bowl? Just if you have recommendations off the top of your head. I can research more.

Great suggestions here.

I'd throw in the General, MacArthur bent, or freehand cob if testing the water and not wanting to commit to a higher price. I really like the open draw of cobs, but some of the stems are meh and they can be shaped awkwardly.

The clay suggestion is great too, but my clumsy ass would break it. Something like a Ropp or Genod would be the next price point.

I know I will break the clay 🤣 but still worth a shot!

I know it I subjective but like 100 -180? I think I found a house pipe from Peterson in that range with a 2.2 inch depth.
For that price you can find an estate Danish freehand on eBay with a massive bowl. Look for Ben Wade pipes, they tend to be huge.

They tend to have large bowls but smaller chambers. As large as this Holm is, it only has a chamber depth of 1.57".
