LOL!! I was on pipes.org. I created my user name based on that tyrant Melvin. "melvins_unsmoked_castello :) He used to be quite a braggart about his vast Dunhill collection and how he couldn't be bothered to use his Castello as it wouldn't do justice to his Penzence..only his dunny's would do.

That guy ruined that forum, which is a shame. I hope whoever is running it now has some way to save/repost the forum archives though as there is a ton of information in them that would be a shame to lose. Despite despot Melvins heavy handed nonsense valuable info did get through.

There was also another forum called Greyfox? or something that was a gathering of pipes.org refugees that fled Melvins fiefdom. I was melvins_unsmoked on there as well but it seems to have gone dark..

I wasn't on that. It sounds lively but doomed. I'm not too sorry it went under if it was as described. I think it's more fun to have been on there than it was at the time.

Yup. GFO. It was fun while it lasted. Went dark maybe 7 or 8 years ago.

I remember the absurd over regulation and the tyrannical style. I endured it for quite a while because there were many postings and threads with interesting information. But when someone, I think it was Melvin, posted a short story about a magic pipe, I just left. I'll do anything for love, but I won't do that.

I never spent much time on Pipes.org , but really enjoyed the interaction on A.S.P.
That was my introduction to the pipe world, and as limited as I felt in deep S.Texas, it opened up a while new world for me.
Ed Duncan deserves accolades for keeping it functional. Somebody told me he’s a pretty good fiddle player too!!

Haha I remember that story :) My breaking point was getting hit right around the time some of Melvins sycophantic followers started a post "In praise of Melvin" or some other such bullshite heaping praise and accolades on him. Although in hindsight, I often wonder if those participating in the Melvin worship, or even the creator of that post was none other then Melvin himself on a handful of sockpuppet accounts..

I mean he had absolute control over the forum..nothing could be posted until he authorized the post to show up. How many other great posts were never even seen due to that? I know I had a handful that never hit the boards..and they didnt even have anything to do with him..At that point he just didnt like me and decided "Nah..I dont agree with that" and boom...post never shows up.

It seems that pain of that experienced lingered for you, to judge by the name you've chosen as a forum handle. Lol.

I, too, spent time on the newsgroups (pipes, tobacco, cigars) around, and just after, the turn of the century. I fondly remember Sailorman Jack and observed the early growth of C&D.

It had many great members..it was a shame Melvin ran it into the ground.
It was a shame the site owner let Melvin run it into the ground. That guy knew little to nothing about either pipes or tobacco, was a sadist, and semi-literate as a writer.
Fortunately he wasn't the only mod, and his turf did not include the pipe maintenance forum. So that part ran reasonably well given the primitive format. There's a real wealth of info in the archives.

OK, guys, can you forgive and forget?

I am sorry I pissed off so many of you. But after a brutal divorce, and five years of therapy I have changed. Now that I have gained humility, I have banished my last character defect. And I realize that Dunhill pipes are not the be all and end all.

I was occasionally on pipes.org and appreciated the wealth of information. The problem that newsgroups and sites like that had were guys like that and asinine, hateful trolls. It really kept me away from doing much more than lurking for years.

Well, no. I thought it might amuse a few people, but it didn't very many, at least based on likes. I particularly liked this statement: "Now that I have gained humility, I have banished my last character defect." ~Too proud to be humble!
