I never have purchased a clay, but someone posted the below site a long time ago which produces some appealing clay pipes with ebonite stems and are also supposed to be less fragile than old fashioned clays.

I had forgotten about it, but this thread reminded me. I'm wondering if anyone here has one of these:

Not my style though!

Love my clays. They are a fun change of pace and make for a good “porch pipe” on a lazy afternoon. Yes they can get hot, but I’ve settled on a minimum length of around 6” and haven’t had problems since. They are great at unlocking flavors from old standby blends that might be missed in briars or cobs.

I'm surprised at the number of people here who have a clay pipe! I've got a clay tavern pipe, probably about a foot and a half long. No glazed tip unfortunately, so it sticks to your lips unless you get it wet. Clays do smoke well. I just prefer a more robust pipe that I don't have to worry about shattering, so I doubt I'll pick up any more clays, though they are fun to try out for curiosity's sake.

I've lost count of how many I've broken as well!
When I could buy them locally it didn't bother me so much, but something about having to wait for them to arrive and then not knowing how often I'll even get to use it just doesn't sit well with me for some reason. Though honestly nothing smokes like them. They really do smoke much cooler then other pipes. In fact unlike most pipes I find they work better if puffed instead of sipped.
