Just a few thoughts: It's amazed me that as I went from museums to galleries to private dealers and auction houses the quality has not waned. The percentage of pipe appearances has lowered and there are a few more hoops to go through in actually getting the images, but the quality of the work is still staggering.
For instance the Corbineau above. I can spend an eternity examining it. The children's eyes are focused on the dog, while the women are intent on the couple. The man smoking the pipe seems to have his focus somewhere else. What exactly is the guy on the right doing? Picking his nose? snuff? cocaine? And then there is the largest wooden furniture piece they own abutting the fireplace. Is the artist trying to show stupidity?
