Mine are divided into aesthetically pleasing and drilled well versus those that aren't.

How, since aesthetic appeal and drilling are both things that can be determined BEFORE purchase, did you end up with any "aren't's"?

I'm curious because they obviously cause you psychological distress. (Many hundreds of mentions of the fact---thousands?---on this board would seem to indicate it, at any rate.)

Isn't that like asking how you can have a story with a pipe before you buy it? He never mentioned anything about before purchases. If I had to hazard a guess, the buys most of them online these days.

???

The never ending obsession is "improperly drilled" pipes.

Whether sold on or simply thrown away, they NEVER make the cut with Mr. Embers. Full stop. It is a fatal error in his mind. Something he has gone to great lengths to make clear for a long time.

As for being bought online, all reputable pipe retailers answer questions about things that can't be seen in their photos; and if from an individual via eBay or similar, the obvious answer would be to AVOID any seller who refused to answer any questions which were THAT important.

Not exactly rocket science.

Which is what makes the situation so confusing. It has gone on for years.

I treat my pipes kind of like my guns. I just don’t sell them and I make smoke with all of them from time to time. I enjoy fondling them at all times. :ROFLMAO:

I sort of get attached to my pipes. Most have a story.

Always wanted a Canadian Brigham. Daughter was in a golf tournament in Alberta. Took some time away and found a Sportsman in a antique shop. Not the most beautiful Brigham I've ever seen but would never part with it.

Found a Vermont Nachwalter at the estate sale of someone that obviously knew pipes. A Leeds Ben Wade. A great smoking Preben Holm.

Can't bring myself to ever divorce any of them.

Understood! Wasn't sure where you were going with that! Lol I never thought to contact a company and ask specific questions first. I'm a shoot first guy myself! Haha

Not all the pipes that are special to me are the result of gifts or have stories. Of those that were gifts or have stories, here are a few examples:

1883 Barling Magnum:
I got this extraordinary pipe from Ken Barnes, which he sold to me for his cost as a thank you for helping him with some historical data, as well as for all of the correspondence.

This top grade Ken Barnes pipe, which Ken sold to me for dealers' cost and which I brought to the WCPS to help publicize Ken's return to pipe making:

This unsmoked 1907 Barling Companion set, which I bought from John Fabris, after spending a pleasant afternoon at his home, being shown what was likely the finest collection of rare museum quality Britwood ever assembled by one human being.

I don't have pictures of some of the others

The two pipes that @jguss gifted to me, the beautiful Barling sandblast that I showed of in the recent Christmas pipe presents thread, and an elegant MM Imports billiard which John sent me a few years ago.

The elegant 1920's Kaywoodie that @ashdigger gifted to me at the 2016 WCPS in fabulous Las Vegas.

Equally special is this 1915 Barling billiard for which @georged fashioned two stems, one period correct, the other a comfortable flat bit. 1915 is my father's birth year. It's the pipe on the right side of this picture.

There are a few others, but I'll stop here.
